Warsaw is a small city in northern Indiana, with a population of around 16,000. The city has been steadily growing since 2000, largely thanks to its orthopedic industry. In 1895, the world’s first company to make orthopedic devices, DePuy Synthes, was founded in Warsaw. Today, DePuy continues to be the city's largest employer, and a variety of other leaders in orthopedic healthcare and manufacturing have moved in as well. As a result, this small town is often called the “Orthopedic Capital of the World.” “The orthopedic industry brings a lot of people to Warsaw,” says Jeremy Skinner, the city’s community and economic development director. “And on top of that, there are a lot of natural amenities — our lakes have so much recreational activity.”

A balanced mix of older homes and new construction
The median home price in Warsaw is $260,000, which is on par with the state median but lower than the national median. Many properties are from the mid to late 1900s. More modern neighborhoods cluster around the edges of the city. “We have a good balance of older stately homes and brand-new subdivisions,” says Sandy Hatcher, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group who has over 45 years of experience in the city. Some of the area’s most expensive homes can be found in the neighboring city of Winona Lake, where lakeshore properties often exceed $1 million. “Winona Lake and Warsaw are pretty much considered the same town because they are right next door,” Hatcher says.

Highly rated public schools and multiple college campuses
Warsaw Community Schools gets an overall A-minus grade from Niche. The district’s one high school, Warsaw Community High, offers dual credit courses with local colleges and is home to the Warsaw Area Career Center. Private school options in the area include Lakeland Christian Academy for kindergarten through 12th grade and Sacred Heart Catholic School for kindergarten through sixth grade.
There are several local universities, including the Warsaw campuses of Ivy Tech and Indiana Tech, as well as Grace College, a private religious institution with around 1,300 students. “We retain a lot of the graduates from local colleges because of our orthopedic industry and affordable prices,” Hatcher says. “So, there’s a good amount of young people here.”

Swimming and fishing on Warsaw’s many lakes
Warsaw contains three lakes and borders Winona Lake, so waterside recreation is a big part of the community in the warm summer months. “Two of our lakes are no-wake, so they tend to be used more for swimming and fishing,” Skinner says. “We have kiosks for people to rent kayaks, longboards and paddleboards.” The city also has several miles of greenways and bike trails that connect the community.
In the winter, temperatures drop, and the city can expect some snow. The City-County Athletic Complex has a full-service indoor fieldhouse for colder weather. Other indoor attractions include the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts, one of the country’s oldest theater-in-the-round stages.

An active community with outdoor events
One of Warsaw’s biggest events is the Fat & Skinny Tire Fest, a celebration of bicycles of all sizes. The festival includes several cycling races, group tours and BMX stunt shows. In the warmer months, residents stay active with regular 5K and 10K races, and the lakeshore comes to life with outdoor concerts. Winona Lake is one of the busiest lakes, with a flotilla parade for the Fourth of July and the community-focused Canal Days festival, where local teams race each other in cardboard boats. “It seems like every weekend there is something to do,” says Hatcher. “There are wineries not too far off, local organizations hold fish fries and on Saturday morning, there’s a farmers market.”
Warsaw's City-County Athletic Center, CCAC, is recognized as one of the top facilities in the nation, hosting National tournaments in men’s, women’s and youth events.
Warsaw's Fat & Skinny Tire Festival is a fun-filled weekend centered on bringing enthusiasts, competitors, casual participants, and spectators together to share in the physical, social, and economic benefits of bicycling and features a BMX race at Hire Park.

Vintage downtown Warsaw and upscale Winona Lake
While Lake City highway is lined with chains, downtown Warsaw has a mix of boutiques and local restaurants. “Downtown is trying to get revitalized,” Hatcher says. “We’re seeing some chic new condos pop up over the local businesses.” For a more upscale shopping experience, locals can head over to the heart of Winona Lake. “It’s like a boutique village,” Hatcher says. “You can visit a fancy shoe store, an artisan olive oil store and several nice restaurants.”
Warsaw is focusing more on local business including the many boutiques downtown and along Winona Lake.
Buffalo Street runs through downtown Warsaw and ends at Center Lake where residents and visitors go to enjoy the outdoors at any one of the city's many parks.

Centrally located to several major cities
U.S. Route 30 runs through Warsaw, heading east to Fort Wayne, 40 miles away and west to Chicago, 120 miles away. South Bend is another major city, about 50 miles north. All three cities have their own commercial airport. Warsaw does have its own medical center, the Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital. For a longer day trip, Grand Rapids and Indianapolis are also less than three hours away.
Crime
According to the FBI Crime Data Explorer, Warsaw’s violent crime rates are on par with the state average, and its property crime rates are slightly higher than state averages. However, crime in the city has been decreasing since 2020.
