Everything’s coming up roses in Wasco
Amid the San Joaquin Valley farmland in southern California lies Wasco, a small town defined by its agricultural connections and close ties to nearby Bakersfield. Acres of orchards unfurl across the landscape beyond the primary residential area of Wasco, and roses are one of its primary outputs. Billing itself as the “Rose Capital of the World”, more than half of all roses grown in the country come from Wasco. “It’s an outlying farm community with a lot of connections to Bakersfield,” says William Gordon, a Realtor with Watson Realty and Gordon Team Realty. “It’s a great community if someone’s looking for a smaller-town feel. I grew up golfing in Wasco. It’s a working town and surrounded by agriculture.”

The rose fields, along with almond orchards and corn fields, line the outskirts.

Historic school buildings for education
At Teresa Burke Elementary School, students start their education within the Wasco Union Elementary School District with grades kindergarten through five. Niche gives the school a grade of C, and those students then graduate to Thomas Jefferson Middle School, which also scores a C and serves grades six through eight. Wasco Union High School completes their learning with ninth through 12th grades, scores a grade of B with Niche and has been open for more than 100 years. It offers its students at least five athletic outlets in each of the fall, winter and spring seasons, ranging from baseball to wrestling to tennis, and its auditorium is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A pair of parks and a famous festival
Barker Park, located near the center of Wasco’s most densely populated area, offers its visitors a playground, a sand volleyball court and open spaces for general activity or a pickup game of baseball or football. Westside Park, placed closer to Wasco High School and northwest of Barker Park, features two baseball fields facing opposite one another on the southeastern and southwestern ends of its area, as well as a lighted basketball court, open space and a playground. Both recreational facilities also offer picnic areas. “They also have the Wasco Rose Festival,” says Autumn Mitchell, Realtor and real estate executive with Tobias Real Estate. “It’s a huge draw.” The Rose Festival is held in the fall and features a different theme each year as well as a pageant, fun run, vendors and more events during its three-day span.

Beyond Wasco, its blooming agricultural scene and its iconic water tower, it’s only a half-hour drive southeast to nearby Bakersfield. Shafter is about half that distance to the south, marking the rough midpoint between Bakersfield and Wasco. The link between Shafter and Wasco is State Route 43, running north and south, while perpendicular to Route 43 is Route 46, running west from Famoso all the way to within a mile of the Pacific Ocean. Kern Transit provides bus routes for general transportation, while the San Joaquin Amtrak service has a stop at the Wasco station.
