Bunker Hill sits atop Waterbury’s west side with suburban charm

In the western part of Waterbury, Bunker Hill is a residential neighborhood with a distinctly suburban feel. Known as one of the city’s hilliest areas, its elevated terrain gives the landscape a scenic quality, with winding streets and varied lot sizes. The neighborhood layout includes a mix of single-family homes, apartment buildings, and small clusters of businesses and office space, but the overall atmosphere leans more family oriented. “I love Bunker Hill,” says Ruth Zeiss, a former resident and Realtor with William Raveis. “It’s attractive for families, but also for single people because it’s so nice and desirable. The price point is higher, but the taxes are lower than Watertown, the next town over. You have a cute park and a new middle school, and it’s an easy commute to New York.” Residents can hop on Interstate 84, which leads 90 miles south to the city, or catch a Metro-North train at the Waterbury station.

Prices range from $145,000 to $400,000 in Bunker Hill’s hillside housing stock.

Historic Cape Cods and bungalows mix with newer hillside homes

Bunker Hill’s housing landscape features a range of single-family homes, including compact Cape Cods, ranch styles, split-levels, Colonial styles and bungalows with spacious front porches. “Down at the bottom of the hill are older homes, over 100 years old, and homes from the ‘20s and ‘30s in Craftsman-like styles,” Zeiss says. “And then up the hill toward Watertown are the newer homes.” Sizes vary widely, from under 1,000 square feet to more than 4,000, and prices can range from $145,000 to $400,000, with a median sale price of $317,000. Many properties have driveways and manicured lawns dotted with mature trees, and attached garages are often located on the basement level. Sidewalks line some streets, though not all. “The community doesn’t have as urban a feel,” Zeiss says. “You have trees all around, and it’s clean and orderly.”
