Living at the center of it all
Hurst attracts homebuyers looking for mid-priced, modern homes near ample shopping and dining. Bordered south by East San Marnan Drive and north by East Ridgeway Avenue, two of Waterloo’s major shopping districts, residents don't have to travel far for anything. It’s also 2 miles south of downtown Waterloo, which has experienced rapid growth over the past decade. Commuting to work is a breeze as well since major employers such as MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center and John Deere are within a 4-mile radius.
“It’s a fantastic area, depending on what you're looking for,” says Sherri Wilson, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Elevated Real Estate and a Waterloo native. “People who want to live around a shopping hub and want to get to work in a hurry, they prefer that area.”
Shopping on East San Marnan, Ridgeway and in downtown Waterloo
Hurst is defined by its location. Along East San Marnan Drive, big box stores include Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Target. It’s also home to Crossroads Mall and Marcus Crossroads Cinema, although the mall is struggling like others across the country. “There’s not a lot in Crossroads Mall anymore, but they have grown other shopping amenities in the area,” Wilson says.
While chain restaurants like Culver’s, Chick-fil-A and Olive Garden are popular along East San Marnan, there are some locally owned community favorites nearby. These include Amigos Mexican Cuisine and Cantina, which serves both traditional dishes and modern variations, like their Mexican Fries.
Downtown Waterloo is also minutes away and is brimming with dining options including SingleSpeed Brewing Co., Big Head Burger and Doughy Joey's Peetza Joynt.
For home supplies, Hurst families can shop at Menards.

A mix of single- and multi-family homes
Hurst primarily consists of condos, townhouses and duplexes. There are also a few single-family homes, but most properties are multi-family. The houses in this community were built between 1975 and 2010, making them far newer than nearby neighborhoods such as Liberty Park, which has an average build year of 1951. Prices in Hurst range from $55,000 for a condo and climb to $285,000 for a single-family home.
Yard space, home size and streetscapes vary by road. Kaplan Drive, for instance, resembles an established suburb brimming with character. It’s lined with ranch-style, split-level and minimal traditional homes built in the mid-1970s and 80s. No two homes are identical, as each displays unique features such as color, material and accents. Stretching trees cast shade on the well-kept sidewalks below. Manicured front lawns are on full display, while wood-fenced backyards often feature swimming pools, gardens and outdoor seating.
On the other hand, Lois Lane is one block over and is a completely different world. Townhouses built between 2009 and 2010 are packed together along this street. Nearly every property is made of siding that is some shade of tan and protruding one and two-car garages are standard. Residents don’t have yard space, although small back porches are used for sitting and grilling on warm days. A lack of established trees means there’s not much shade. There is also a lack of sidewalks, so short driveways directly merge into the narrow road.
Some homes in Hurst feature multi-car garages and wide driveways.

Using East San Marnan, Interstate 380 and US 20 to travel
Hurst is a driver-centric neighborhood. While residents do walk their dogs and take morning strolls around their blocks, they need a car to get everywhere else. Commuting is done by using East San Marnan, Interstate 380 and U.S. Route 20. “Commute time is much lower since East San Marnan is right there,” Wilson says. “It’s a main travel area. You can get from there to Cedar Falls in roughly 15 to 20 minutes.”
People are also drawn to the area for its proximity to major employers. MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center is less than a mile west of this neighborhood, and a John Deere manufacturing plant is about 4 miles northwest.
Kittrell Elementary, Hoover Middle and Waterloo West High

It’s about a mile west of Hurst and offers over 40 clubs and activities including bowling, Bible club and eSports.

Celebrating culture downtown
Hurst residents are a short drive from the amplitude of events that take place in downtown Waterloo. “Waterloo is a really diverse city, and one of the cool things about our events is that they showcase and celebrate the diverse melting pot our community is,” says Jessica Rucker, executive director of Main Street Waterloo. The Iowa Irish Fest, Haitian Flag Day and Juneteenth Celebration are just a few of the major cultural events that happen downtown every year.
