Neighbors Who Care residents have easy access to US 20, US 63 and US 218, providing an easy start to any commute.“One of the advantages of the city of Waterloo is that there’s no traffic,” says John Chiles, Ward 1 Councilman. “If the place you're going is 60 miles away and the speed limit is 60 miles per hour, you know you’ll get there in an hour.”
Residents are also in the center of the city and within minutes of major employers. John Deere, MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center and Hawkeye Community College are all within a 2.5-mile radius of Neighbors Who Care.
Byrnes Park, Hope Martin Memorial Park and more
Greenspaces are abundant around Neighbors Who Care. Byrnes Park is south of the neighborhood and offers a playscape, volleyball court, pickleball courts, a public swimming pool, a basketball court and ample open field space. The park is also home to the public,18-hole Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course. Established in 1908, it’s the city’s oldest golf course.Hope Martin Memorial Park is northwest of US 63. While it features a playscape, people mostly use the park for fishing, sledding and picnics. Greenbelt Lake Park is connected to Memorial Park by the 10-mile-long Sergeant Road Trail. It’s a community favorite for trail walks, picnics and fishing for largemouth bass. It’s also home to Pat Bowlsby Off-Leash Dog Park and several baseball diamonds.
Hy-Vee, East San Marnan Drive and Ridgeway
Along with proximity to major highways and employers, residents are surrounded by shopping and dining options. Hy-Vee is the go-to for grocery needs and is about 1.5 miles south of Neighbors Who Care."When I moved here, I was used to groceries and stuff being so expensive and taxes just making it worse," Chiles says. "But when you come here, you spend a little less. Our average grocery bill per week is about 40 bucks for my wife and me.”
In addition to Hy-Vee, residents are within a short distance of big box stores like Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club. Located about 3 miles east of the neighborhood, these big box stores line East San Marnan Drive, Waterloo’s major shopping district.
"We have everything you could possibly want right around the corner – and we’re looking to expand that,” Chiles says.
Ridgeway Avenue is home to smaller, locally owned restaurants and shops. The Other Place is a sports-themed pizzeria known for its casual atmosphere and taco pizza.
Kingsley Elementary, Hoover Middle and Waterloo West High
Kingsley Elementary is the first stop for kindergarten through fifth-grade kids. The school earns a C-plus rating from Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Hoover Middle serves sixth through eighth graders and has a B-minus rating. The last step is Waterloo West High, which has a B-minus and offers over 40 clubs and activities, including bowling, Refugee Immigrant Youth Organization (RIYO), Bible Club and eSports.Events in downtown Waterloo
