Shopping at East San Marnan, East Ridgeway, Kimball and downtown
East San Marnan is one of Waterloo’s major shopping districts. It's home to big box stores such as Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club. It also houses Crossroads Mall. The mall doesn’t see much foot traffic anymore as many of the stores have closed. However, Marcus Crossroads Cinema, which is located in the mall, is still a community favorite. On the other hand, locally owned establishments and smaller chains line East Ridgeway and Kimball. LJ's Neighborhood Bar & Grill is one of many locally-owned restaurants on Kimball. The casual pub is just down the road from Fareway Meat and Grocery.
Downtown Waterloo is also a 2-mile drive north of Park Haven and features an evolving restaurant scene. Doughy Joey’s Peetza Joynt has made a comeback to the area. “Doughy Joey's was in downtown for a long time. They moved out a while ago, and missed us so much they came back,” says Jessica Rucker, executive director of Main Street Waterloo. “We’re excited to have them back and they’re definitely a staple to the downtown community.”
Lou Henry Elementary, Hoover Middle and West High
Lou Henry Elementary has a C rating on Niche and serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The elementary school is about a mile west of Park Haven and receives high reviews from faculty and guardians for its caring staff. Hoover Middle is on the same campus as Lou Henry and has a B-minus rating. Waterloo West High, which is just north of East Ridgeway and also has a B-minus. The high school offers over 40 clubs and activities including Waterloo Youth City Council, Black Student Union and Nerd Club.1960s and 70s single-family homes on larger lots
Similar to the Hurst neighborhood just east of Park Haven, the location is a main draw. The primary difference between the two communities is the kinds of homes available. Hurst mostly offers condos and townhouses, while Park Haven mostly offers single-family homes. Ranch-style, cottage and split-level homes built in the 1960s and 70s line the streets. With a median lot size of about 11,000 square feet, residents have a little more land than their neighbors in nearby communities. For comparison, Hurst’s median lot size of about 9,500 square feet, and Liberty Park’s is about 7,400.Manicured front lawns are on full display as residents take pride in curb appeal. Established trees tower in front and backyards, and many homes have well-kept gardens as well. There are no sidewalks in Park Haven, so short, paved driveways (many of which feature in-ground basketball hoops) directly merge into the narrow roads.
There are also a few condos at Prairie Rapids Condos.
Single-family home prices range from about $175,000 to $285,000. Condos sell for about $150,000, but they’re hard to come by.
Recreation at Bontrager Park and Cedar Valley SportsPlex
Bontrager Park sits at Park Haven’s southern end and offers a playscape and picnic tables. There’s also open greenspace for field sports. For more recreation, residents are about 2.5 miles south of the Cedar Valley Sportsplex. “The Sportsplex downtown, it was built less than 10 years ago, and a lot of people go there to go swimming, play basketball, use the track,” says Justin Finn, realtor with Four Seasons Realtors.Events in downtown Waterloo
Proximity to downtown means residents are a short drive from annual activities – but they don't have to deal with the noise. My Waterloo Days, Friday Loo and the annual Food Truck Fest are just a few major events hosted downtown.
“During the Food Truck Fest, we have food trucks from across the region,” Rucker says. “So basically, starve yourself for three days and then come because you're going to eat a ton of great food.”
Using East San Marnan and US 20 to commute
Park Haven is driver-centric. While most essentials are only about a mile away, there are no sidewalks, bike lanes or public transit routes. Locals mostly use East San Marnan and US 20 — with an on-ramp 1 mile south of the neighborhood — to get around.
