About 20 miles southeast of Uptown Charlotte, Wesley Chapel is a small Union County village known for its family-friendly atmosphere. Starting as a small rural community in the early 1800s, Wesley Chapel has maintained much of its agricultural charm as it’s shifted into a more suburban community since it was incorporated in 1998. “Growing up there, it was a small town area, but it’s grown like crazy,” says Shannon Goodson, a Realtor with Southland Homes & Realty. In 2000, around 2,500 people called this village home. By 2020, that number jumped to more than 8,600. “It’s a great community. You can go into Target and Chick-fil-A, and you’re guaranteed to know someone,” says Goodson, who adds that while it neighbors the high-end community of Weddington, Wesley Chapel is comparably more affordable and draws in newcomers for being in a highly rated school district. Largely a network of subdivisions, the village’s main economic driver is its central shopping centers, flanked by a primary care facility and an animal hospital.

A mix of suburban homes and family farms
Farmland and forest fill the space between Wesley Chapel’s growing number of subdivisions. The median price for a single-family home here is around $725,000, well above the national and Charlotte's median. However, home prices in neighboring Weddington start well over $1 million. Architectural styles range from New Traditional and newly built Transitional homes to classic Colonial Revival-inspired designs and 1970s split levels. “When I have someone looking in Wesley Chapel, I tell them to act fast,” Goodson says. Properties typically sell after 34 days on the market, compared to the national average of 45 days.

Nearby private school options include Arborbrook Christian Academy, a B-plus-rated kindergarten through 12th-grade school, and the unrated Thales Academy Waxhaw. Weddington Optimist Park is where youth sports thrive
What was only fields when Goodson was a child is now Weddington Optimist Park, a sprawling green space centered around youth sports. “You’ve got football, softball, soccer and baseball. In the spring and summer, it’s packed. That’s where everybody is,” Goodson says. A playground and off-leash dog park bring families to Dogwood Park, where a paved walking path circles a pond with a fishing pier. Subdivisions around the village have community green spaces and pools. More public parks and golf courses, including Country Club of the Carolinas, are in neighboring towns.

Recognizable retailers anchor Village Commons
Just west of Village Hall is Village Commons, the community’s retail hub. It features national stores and grocery chains, along with a few local restaurants. A wider selection of shops and restaurants is a 7-mile drive west to Waverly, a sprawling outdoor shopping mall. Retail centers in Monroe to the east offer another shopping option, plus a movie theater.

Warbirds Over Monroe honors veterans with a thrilling air show
One of the biggest events in the area happens each November around Veterans Day. The annual Warbirds Over Monroe Air Show draws thousands to Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport outside Wesley Chapel for exciting aerial performances and vendors stocked with military memorabilia. During the two-day event, planes are displayed on the ground before pilots take them to the sky. “You can hear it all throughout Wesley Chapel,” Goodson says.

Commuting to Uptown Charlotte, deputies on patrol
State Route 84 passes through Wesley Chapel, leading to Interstate 485 and U.S. Route 74, which can be used to commute to Uptown Charlotte. Charlotte Douglas International Airport sits west of Uptown, offering nonstop flights to destinations including New York and Washington, D.C. While the village is a car-dependent community, Goodson says road cycling is a popular hobby here. Drivers often share the area’s backroads with cyclists. Wesley Chapel is patrolled by deputies with the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Crime data specific to the village is not readily available.
