Community events and a recreational lake
With waterfront homes along Lake Wickaboag, expansive hardwood forests and a historic downtown, the West Brookfield neighborhood offers peaceful, community-oriented living in west Worcester County. “I always like to say our town common looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. There’s a green lawn with a fountain and bandstand downtown,” says Cassie Paolucci, broker/owner of Post Road Realty, who has lived in the area for years. Lake Wickaboag, a fully recreational lake with a resident-only beach, is located at the center of the neighborhood. While West Brookfield’s landscape is a blend of nature and historical buildings, and there are frequent community events, residents maintain proximity to urban areas.
Swim at Lake Wickaboag or hike at Rock House Reservation
Located downtown, West Brookfield Common is a dedicated green space with picnic tables, a baseball field and a bandstand. Lake Wickaboag is situated in the center of the neighborhood, and residents are welcome to boat, jet ski, fish and swim at West Brookfield Town Beach. Those looking to explore hardwood Massachusetts forests will find forested trails with large stone outcrops at Rock House Reservation. The remains of long-ago glacial activity, the nature preserve has 20-to-30-foot-high boulders around Carter Pond for locals to explore.

Colonials along Lake Wickaboag
Styles and views vary widely throughout West Brookfield. Along the lake, Colonial Revivals and cottages from the mid-20th century are common. These properties have waterfront views and often feature sloping yards that lead to personal docks. Along forested rural residential streets, there are ranches and Colonial Revivals built in the 1970s and 80s, which offer landscaped grass yards. On the smaller downtown lots are 19th-century homes in various styles, including colonial, Greek Revival and Queen Anne. Ranches start at $195,000, but modern finishings can increase the price to $345,000. Colonials usually sell for $300,000, but a 5-bedroom home on multiple acres can cost $550,000, and a similar waterfront home may cost $850,000. Open lots are available as well; those looking to build a home can buy 6 acres for $80,000.

Dine at one of the oldest taverns in the country
Hitchcock Tavern, which opened in 1760 and served Presidents George Washington and John Adams, reopened after renovations. The tavern serves cocktails and classics like burgers and fish & chips. For casual dining, Howard’s Drive-in is open seasonally and serves seafood, burgers and ice cream. Residents can find locally grown produce and baked goods at The West Brookfield Farmers Market, which operates on the town common on Wednesdays from June to October; a winter market happens from November to March. The nearest grocery store is regional supermarket Hannaford, located 6 miles northwest in North Brookfield. There are antique stores and small businesses like Quaboag Book Shop downtown.

Support local vendors at the annual Asparagus and Flower Heritage Festival
“It’s a close community that loves to gather for events. On the town common, there’s a White Christmas Fair, Concerts on the Common during the summer and the Asparagus and Flower Heritage Festival,” Paolucci says. The Merriam-Gilbert Public Library hosts craft groups, book discussions, toddler groups and story hours. The Lake Wickaboag Preservation Association hosts events like the Ice Out Contest, where locals guess when a marker will fall through the ice.
Career readiness through the Innovation Pathways program
Students may begin at West Brookfield Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche, followed by B-rated Quaboag Regional Middle Innovation School and Quaboag Regional High School, which share a campus. Upperclassmen can participate in the state’s Innovation Pathways program, which offers college-level classes with a focus on career prep. Through the biomedical innovation program, students can take a Certified Nursing Assistant training course and a phlebotomy course through Holyoke Community College.
Drive to Brookfield and catch a bus to Worcester
Route 33 on the Worcester Regional Transit Authority offers a route from Brookfield to Worcester. The nearest bus stop is 4 miles from West Brookfield, but commuters can travel 20 miles east to Worcester on the free bus line. Downtown roads offer sidewalks for residents to walk to local shops and amenities. However, most of the neighborhood is car-dependent and commuting is common, so locals must drive personal vehicles to access neighboring towns. State routes connect residents to major highways, like Interstate 90.
