West Newton is a Westmoreland County borough that’s a boon for outdoor lovers — it straddles the Youghiogheny River and features a portion of the Great Allegheny Passage. But someone doesn’t have to be an outdoor enthusiast to find value in this community. West Newton Pizza House is another well-liked haunt, just about a block from Gary’s Chuckwagon. One of West Newton Pizza’s signatures is its cheddar cheese topping. The Yough School District
The Yough School District services kids in West Newton, a system with a B-minus overall rating on Niche. West Newton Elementary is a conveniently located spot for students to start, for kindergarten to fourth grade. This B-rated school has an active PTO, behind events like a Halloween costume parade around the school grounds. Students here then move on to the C-plus-rated Yough Intermediate Middle School for fifth grade to eighth grade, where there are multiple interscholastic sports teams, including boys and girls soccer and girls basketball. Yough Senior High is next, a B-rated school whose course offerings include an engineering class.

Plenty of outdoor attractions
West Newton’s list of outdoor attractions includes Goehring Park, a sprawling space with a playground, a couple of ballfields and a fishing pond. Residents can also hop on a portion of the 150-mile-long Great Allegheny Passage for a stroll or bike ride. The trail passes by Gap Trail Campground, a spot those passing through on the trail can stop, featuring showers and more. The Youghiogheny River is the literal recreational centerpiece of the area. This is a fishing hotspot, considered the top place for smallmouth bass in southwestern Pennsylvania. Anglers can also find trout in the Youghiogheny River.

Seasonal events
West Newton has its own farm & vendor market, held on Tuesdays from May to September and featuring a variety of fresh produce, from red carrots to maitake mushrooms. The borough’s annual staples include the Miracle on Main Street holiday celebration in November, where there’s food trucks, live music, children’s crafts and a parade.
West Newton residents have everything that they need right in town.
Route 136 and 51 to get to Pittsburgh
Residents here can quickly reach Pennsylvania Route 136, which connects to Route 51 for commutes north toward Pittsburgh, just about 26 miles away. Locals can also use Route 31 here to reach Interstate 70, another of the area’s major arteries.
