Immersive living in a South Florida setting
Golden Lakes is a community that can help residents get the most out of their golden years. This area of West Palm Beach is dominated by Golden Lakes Village, a sprawling 55-plus development full of condos and villa-style homes in a leafy, resort-style environment complete with palm trees. Residents don’t have to leave the neighborhood for amenities, including pools and tennis courts, but there are multiple restaurants, stores and entertainment venues just outside the community, too. “It’s safe. There’s a gated community, which was one of the reasons I was attracted to it,” says Karen Massinello, owner and broker at Massinello Realty and a Golden Lakes resident. “It’s also the perfect location, with access to I-95, the Florida Turnpike. You can be in Boca or Jupiter in 20 to 30 minutes. It’s close to the airport and the shopping outlets. You’re almost in downtown West Palm Beach without having to pay those high taxes. It’s just a great community.”

Find a home that fits in Golden Lakes Village or beyond
Golden Lakes Village was built in two sections, Phase A and Phase B. Phase B, on the neighborhood's north end, dates back to the 1970s, and Phase B popped up in the ’80s. The housing in both sections has similar Mediterranean styling with terracotta roofs. Many of the condos here are part of multistory buildings with multiple units ranging from under 600 square feet with one bedroom and one bathroom to more than 1,300 square feet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Villas are 700 to just over 1,000 square feet, and can offer a bit more privacy and accessibility. “The villas are one story, which a lot of people prefer. They’re not as close together,” says local Realtor Rhonda Townsend of RE/MAX Excellence, who has more than 10 years of real estate experience. Many homes are on waterfront property, too, thanks to the network of lakes here. There are some other developments just outside Golden Lakes Village that aren’t age-restricted, like Thousand Pines Estates, where there are single-family homes, and Palm Beach Place, a condo complex. Condos across the Golden Lakes area sell for between $100,000 and $300,000. Villa-style homes go for $115,000 to $325,000, while traditional single-family houses sell for $690,000 to $900,000.

From dancing to swimming, there are plenty of ways to get moving
Both phases of Golden Lakes Village have clubhouses with pools, fitness centers, and tennis and shuffleboard courts. Residents can take dance classes or do water aerobics at the clubhouses, too. Massinello has personally taught a line dancing class in the neighborhood. “It’s a very fun activity, especially for the people who are widowed,” Massinello says. “It gets them back on the dance floor.” People in this area are also just under 7 miles from the 70-acre Lake Lytal Park, where there are multiple basketball courts and multipurpose fields, plus an aquatic center with multiple pools. The beach is only a 9-trip as well.

There are plenty of chain spots here, like Longhorn Steakhouse, Chili's and Chick-fil-A. Zona Blu, which serves Sardinian-inspired Mediterranean food from salmon to octopus, is close by as well. Okeechobee also has Target, The Home Depot and multiple grocery stores, including Walmart and Publix. Golden Lakes Village residents can grab a bite within the neighborhood at the Café 1500 in Phase B, whose menu has everything from breakfast burritos to skirt steak.
