Vibrant suburb on the outskirts of Kansas City
Located along the Missouri state line and just a leap away from the Kansas City metro area, Westwood offers residents a storybook living experience along tree-shaded lanes brimming with Tudor and cottage homes evocative of Renaissance-era England.
Westwood's old-school appearance belies a relatively young community. Westwood owes its origins to the post-World War II housing boom, when the land surrounding a small homestead was transformed into a platted suburb of Kansas City. Realtor Maura Coleman says, "Westwood is really interesting, as there are two Westwoods – Westwood Hills and Westwood, Kansas. Both were J.C. Nichols developments started around 1922." Westwood was incorporated in 1949, and the next several decades saw the development of a vibrant community brought together both by neighborhood associations and by the shared aesthetics of many of Westwood's homes.

Colonials and bungalows with larger lots
Westwood is home to several green lanes lined with homes of varying sizes and styles, from multi-story homes and Tudor residences to unique A-frames, Colonials and bungalows. Its hilly, residential streets are flanked by sidewalks and vast front lawns, and many of them are shaded by trees, providing residents with an urbane existence recalling the charms of a Shakespearean country town with both its verdant nature and its stately homes. On housing prices, Coleman says, "Westwood Hills’ homes are valued a little bit more and are larger than those in Westwood, Kansas." Westwood's homes tend to sell for between $350,000 and $500,000, reflecting an in-demand housing scene benefited by proximity to Kansas City and by this town's visual charms.

Grassland parks and hikes along Brush Creek
Westwood is surrounded by nature on all sides. In the north, Westwood Park includes broad grasslands with patches of trees, preserving the scenic beauty of western Missouri. In addition, the park is home to a playground which includes a jungle gym and swing set, and a prominent fountain whose sculpted scenes recall the Classical Roman fountains. Paved walking paths invite Westwood residents to take a sunny stroll, and the park's hills are popular for sledding during the winter months. To the south, a broad stretch of Brush Creek has been turned into a green area with a waterside walkway for scenic walks along the boundary of urban Kansas City and its southern suburbs.
