Rich history and a vibrant community in Hartford

Located at the confluence of the Connecticut and White Rivers, White River Junction began as a bustling railroad hub where the Central Vermont and Boston and Main Railroads converged and served over 50 passenger trains each day. As the largest railroad center in Vermont, the village became the entertainment center for the town of Hartford, hosting performances from the Barnum & Bailey Circus, Buffalo Bill and the Vermont State Fair. Following the decline of the railroads after World War II, a revitalization brought new life to downtown White River Junction. While the Central Vermont and B&M Railroads no longer travel through the village, it remains the cultural hub of Hartford with a convergence of history, local businesses and art. “Hartford is made up of five villages, but White River Junction itself is very much a small community,” says Margaret Marion, an administrative assistant with the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department. “It’s definitely quaint, but we do get a lot of tourists from the train station there.”

Shopping and Dining

Main Street anchors downtown White River Junction, and wide sidewalks lead past vibrant storefronts. Racks of vintage clothes fill Revolution, while Post sells everything from jigsaw puzzles to Japanese stationery and greeting cards. The local food scene spans the globe and includes spots like Tuckerbox, a Turkish café known for its traditional dishes and specialty coffees. Just down the street is Big Fatty’s BBQ, a casual spot serving up smoked meats alongside live music every Friday and Saturday night. Historic freight houses have been converted into contemporary restaurants like Elixir, an upscale eatery serving American classics and craft cocktails. River Roost Brewery serves craft beers in an industrial taproom, while Putnam’s Vine/Yard functions as a wine bar and a plant shop where residents can sample local wines while surrounded by lush greenery. For groceries, Co-op Food Stores sits in the heart of White River Junction and is less than 2 miles from most residents.

Artistic community includes the White River Indie Film Festival

The decline of the railroad industry in the mid-1900s left White River Junction with vacant industrial buildings and warehouses, but an artistic revitalization has brought new life to these spaces. The revitalization includes collaborative spaces like the Tip Top Media and Arts Building, which houses everything from a pottery store to an office space for Google. Long River Gallery displays a rotating collection of work from local artisans, while the award-winning Northern Stage theater company offers plays and musicals for all ages. This creative community has made the village a destination for events like the White River Indie Film Festival, which brings film screenings, panel discussions and educational workshops to White River Junction each February.

Boating, fishing and summer concerts at Lyman Point Park

Several green spaces line the shores of the Connecticut and White Rivers. Lyman Point Park sits at the confluence of the two rivers and features a carry-in boat launch, fishing access and a playground. The park also has a bandstand where the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department hosts concerts and movie nights all summer long. “We also partner with the Hartford Community Coalition to do a block party there each year. A lot of community members come together for that,” Marion says. Between Hartford Memorial Middle School and Hartford High School is the Sherman Manning Aquatic Facility, where the public pool is open from June to August. The school campus is also home to the Wendell A. Barwood Arena, an indoor ice-skating rink with youth and adult hockey leagues. Hartford’s biggest outdoor attraction is Quechee Gorge State Park, which is less than 7 miles from White River Junction. The green space spans 612 acres and features an expansive system of nature trails that wind around the Ottaquechee River. The river flows through the Quechee Gorge, which is 165 feet deep and is often called Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon.
