Whitingham has rural homes and outdoor beauty
Whitingham offers history and spacious backcountry homes among dense sugar maple trees. The town is anchored by the small village of Jacksonville, which has town government buildings and small businesses. The town is historically known as the birthplace of Brigham Young, one of the founding members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, back in the early 19th century. The town’s land market and outdoor activities appeal to residents and vacation homeowners alike, seeking seclusion and opportunities for everything from hunting, fishing and riding snowmobiles on private properties.
Folks fish, hunt and ride snowmobiles on private land
“Snowmobiles and hunting are more popular here with all the land available to homeowners,” says Adam Palmiter, a Southern Vermont local and Realtor with Berkley & Veller Greenwood/Dover. “I would say watersports are more focused towards Wilmington, but some people here definitely fish and boat.” Deerfield Valley Sportsmen’s Club is based in Whitingham for hunting and fishing enthusiasts to meet and abide by Vermont game regulations. Residents can either snowmobile and hunt on their private land or head to Atherton Meadow State Wildlife Management Area and track white-tailed deer and wild turkeys. Sadawga Lake is also a popular spot in town for anglers to catch largemouth bass and bullheads. Town Hill Common hosts a playground, picnic pavilion and public grills for the community to enjoy, just across the street from the Brigham Young Memorial.
Farmhouses stretched on multi-acre parcels
Along Whitingham’s rolling country streets are farmhouses, Colonial Revivals and cottages, usually on multi-acre lots. “It’s more bang for your buck, with relative affordability for a resort town in this area,” says Adam Palmiter, a Southern Vermont local and Realtor with Berkley & Veller Greenwood/Dover. “Some people look for second homes with more land here.” Homes are priced from $250,000 to $600,000, varying by age, square footage and lot size.
General shops in Jacksonville, and restaurants in Brattleboro
Jacksonville General Store offers basic groceries for locals and is just a few doors down from North River Bakery, which serves pastries, deli sandwiches and loaves of bread. The nearest dining district is 20 miles east in Brattleboro, so residents can drive to Main Street restaurants like Yalla Vermont, serving up Mediterranean dishes for brunch and lunch.
Twin Valley Unified School District serves Whitingham youth
Whitingham falls under the Twin Valley Unified School District. Twin Valley Elementary is rated a B-plus on Niche and is further north in Wilmington. At home, Twin Valley Middle High School serves grades six through 12 and holds a C-rating. Twin Valley Middle High also offers the Wings Community Program, an after-school course that keeps students engaged academically and helps their social development.
Vermont Route 9 is the town's main commuter road
Locals tend to work in different towns around Windham County. Commercial hubs like Brattleboro are over 20 miles from home along Vermont Route 9, a half-hour commute. Homebuyers should be advised that Whitingham experiences heavy snowfall in the winters, as Vermont is America’s snowiest state, and should plan commutes and day-to-day activities accordingly.
