More land and fewer neighbors just outside Chattanooga
Whitwell is surrounded by natural and agricultural scenery at the foot of Appalachia’s Cumberland Plateau. The Tennessee town of roughly 1,600 is less than 25 miles northwest of Chattanooga. “It’s just far away enough that you can actually work in Chattanooga, but you get more property and fewer neighbors for the money,” says resident Clint Carroll, a real estate agent with Mossy Oak Properties Land Sales. Whitwell offers a slower pace of life, with ample access to rustic recreation, from hunting and fishing to hiking, biking and horseback riding. “It’s definitely a small town – low-key – but it’s the country. It’s very beautiful, there are beautiful creeks and pasture lands.”
Spacious properties with vintage charm and newer builds
Whitwell has a variety of historic and contemporary homes. Its vintage stock features cottages and bungalows from the early 1900s and midcentury ranch-style charmers. Newer homes include split-level houses, Cape Cods, contemporary cottages and New Traditional residences. Most properties are on an acre or more, but smaller lots are also available, especially toward the heart of town. Overall prices range from less than $100,000 to around $470,000. A few tributaries of the Sequatchie River run through the area, and special flood zones surround them. Properties touching these zones may require flood insurance for a federally backed mortgage.
Life in Southeast Tennessee means hiking trails and river views
Surrounded by natural beauty, Whitwell offers easy access to some of Southeast Tennessee’s most scenic outdoor escapes. Just minutes away, Savage Gulf State Park invites hikers to explore nearly 60 miles of trails that wind past waterfalls, wildflowers, and the dramatic Great Stone Door—a towering cliff split by a natural fissure. In town, Whitwell City Park serves as a gathering place for community events and is home to the Marion County Veterans Memorial and the Whitwell Saddle Club. For more rugged adventure, Prentice Cooper State Forest stretches along the Tennessee River Gorge, offering hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations. It also has a wildlife management area, popular for hunting.
Locals shop small at Smith Brothers and Castle’s Grocery
Tennessee 28 is the main drag for shopping, dining and most other things in town. It’s lined with a few chains, including DG Market and Save A Lot, but those who prefer to shop local frequent the family-owned Smith Brothers Grocery and longstanding Castle’s Grocery. The Chef’s Restaurant is another local favorite, family-owned with a homestyle Southern menu to boot.
Career and technical programs offered at Whitwell High
Marion County Schools has a C on Niche. Whitwell Elementary earns a B-minus, Whitwell Middle gets a C-plus and Whitwell High receives a B-minus. The high school has several career and technical education programs, such as carpentry, engineering, nursing, welding and veterinary science.
A middle school project that became a global Holocaust memorial
In the early 2000s, Whitwell gained national attention for a project started in 1998, when eighth graders at Whitwell Middle collected paper clips to represent the 6 million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust. What started as a principal’s attempt to educate students on the real dangers of intolerance and racism grew into a Washington Post article and an award-winning documentary. Today, the heartfelt project is commemorated by the Children’s Holocaust Memorial, a historic German boxcar filled with more than 30 million paper clips and tens of thousands of letters sent to Whitwell Middle from around the world.
Light traffic and scenic drives define daily life in Whitwell
In a town this small, Carroll says that getting stuck at a light is the least of anyone’s worries. “There are [stoplights], but there’s no traffic here.” Taking Suck Creek Road, which winds through the plateau highlands, it’s about a 24-mile drive to Chattanooga. And Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, on the city’s east side, is closer to 35 miles away. Whitwell’s closest emergency room is about 13 miles down Tennessee 28.
