A historic village along the Connecticut River

Originally known as Olcott Falls, Wilder began as an early planned community named for a pair of waterfalls on the Connecticut River. The falls played an essential role in the village's development, eventually leading Charles Wilder to establish the Olcott Falls Company in 1883. The company became known as the Wilder Paper Mill, and the village was renamed to honor the legacy of Charles Wilder. Today, the Wilder Village Historic District preserves the community’s original homes and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As Wilder’s mills and factories have disappeared, the village is now largely residential and offers a tranquil, suburban feel. While the community embraces a slower pace of life than it did in its heyday, it’s just one of five villages in Hartford and is 2 miles from the cultural hub of White River Junction.

Traditional homes in the Wilder Village Historic District

The Wilder Village Historic District protects the community’s historic housing stock. Residential development began in the late 19th century when gable-front houses were built to accommodate employees of the Wilder Paper Mill. Around the same time, middle- and upper-class families built larger estates along Hartford and Norwich Avenues, including Queen Anne and Tudor Revival-style homes that remain standing today. The United Church of Christ is also located along Hartford Avenue and dates to 1890, serving as an example of Queen Anne and Stick Style architecture. Later development includes a mix of ranch-style, Cape Cod-style and New Englander-style houses built throughout the second half of the 20th century. Single-family homes typically sell for $300,000 to $560,000. Homebuyers will also find several condo communities in Wilder, with prices ranging from $175,000 for a one-bedroom unit to $485,000 for a stand-alone condo with three bedrooms. The neighborhood has an overall CAP Index Crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Shops and restaurants in downtown White River Junction

Wilder is almost entirely residential, but the commercial corridor of downtown White River Junction is just 2 miles south. “There’s a whole strip of shopping there. You also have Long River Gallery, which has a whole bunch of local artists on display,” says Margaret Marion, administrative assistant for the Hartford Parks and Recreation department. Vintage shops like Revolution sit next to creative spaces like the Northern Stage, an award-winning theater company known for its theatrical productions and educational programming. Wooden benches fill Big Fatty’s BBQ, a casual spot serving smoked meats, homemade barbecue sauces and classic southern side dishes. Tuckerbox specializes in Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine, while Ava’s Candy Corner is a go-to spot for rolled ice cream. For groceries, Co-op Food Stores is less than 2 miles away.

Boat launch and nature trail at Kilowatt Park

Tucked along the shores of the Connecticut River is Kilowatt Park, which is split into two sections: Kilowatt North and Kilowatt South. The northern half of the park features a shaded picnic area, while the southern half has an athletic field and a carry-in boat lunch. “That’s also a popular fishing spot,” Marion says. Kilowatt Park Trail runs parallel to the riverfront and connects the two green spaces, spanning nearly 2 miles. At Frost Park, residents have access to a basketball court and a playground with a swing set. Dedicated to Charles Wilder, the Wilder Club and Library has been serving the community for over a century. The library hosts live music, author panels and book readings alongside seasonal festivities like an annual Halloween party. Less than 2 miles south is the Sherman Manning Aquatic Facility, which is part of the Hartford Memorial Middle School and Hartford High School campus and is open seasonally from June to August.

Festivities at the Quechee Hot Air Balloon Craft and Music Festival

Hartford’s biggest outdoor attraction is Quechee Gorge State Park, which is less than 8 miles from Wilder. The green space spans 612 acres and features an expansive system of nature trails that wind around the Ottauquechee River. The river flows through the Quechee Gorge, which is often called Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon. Each June, residents can head to Quechee Green Park for the annual Quechee Hot Air Balloon Craft and Music Festival. Vibrant hot air balloons float over the upper Connecticut River Valley, and the festivities include craft vendors, food trucks and live music.
