Cross on over to 11th Street Bridge, a neighborhood with plenty of attached living options and local charm to spare. “I’ve had a lot of interest in this area because it’s close to bus services and other transport so it’s easy to get to the city,” says Dianne Platt, a local Realtor with Patterson Schwartz Real Estate. “It’s a mostly residential area filled with town homes but there is a park in walking distance so it's a great neighborhood for kids.”

The community is named for the bridge spanning Brandywine Creek, which was first built in the 1860s as a wooden drawbridge and later replaced with a steel version. When a railway was built in the early 1900s, the first developers came to the area to build simple workers’ housing, and the neighborhood was born.

You’ll find mostly established brick rowhomes and newer town houses that can range in price from $95,000 to $125,000. Homes were built between the early 1900s and the early 2000s and can be anywhere from 1,100 to 1,300 square feet in size. Attached homes and small lots encourage residents to get to know their neighbors, while sidewalks highlight the walkability of the area and allow joggers and dog walkers to enjoy some fresh air. Garages provide additional convenience.

Students in the neighborhood can attend McCullough Middle School, which received a C rating from Niche and has a high participation rate of over 100 students actively involved with music programs like band, chorus and musical theater. The school also has a state-of-the-art fitness center to support a variety of sports teams which include soccer, wrestling and cheerleading. Club options include Business Professionals of America, yearbook and newspaper.

Howard High School is another option that received a B-minus rating from Niche and has a rich history that dates back 150 years. This career and technical school has five separate areas of study that include everything from business to dental assistance. The school also partners with Delaware Technical and Community College, University of Delaware and Wilmington University to provide students with dual enrollment opportunities. Christina High School received a B rating from Niche and along with its traditional curriculum, also offers programs like agricultural science, marketing and engineering. Students are supported through programs like ELL, Networks and Christina REACH.

Visit Brandywine Playground to let your little ones stretch their legs while you prepare lunch at one of the picnic tables. Johnston Playground is another option with basketball courts, benches and a paved walking path shaded by mature trees. The Urban Farm & Community Garden is a great spot to soak up some sunshine and get involved. You can sample the garden’s produce on weekday mornings at the corner of 12th and Brandywine Streets in northeast Wilmington.

Grab a drink from the local watering hole at Leroy’s Lounge, a modest joint that’s been operating for over 40 years and is known for its cheap drinks, relaxed bartenders and good music. Swing by Ray’s Deli for your favorite cold cut or Shiva Grocery & Variety Store for a sandwich and a hot dog. Dollar General offers additional goods to satisfy your grocery needs.

Enjoy additional local charms like the murals painted on the Kingswood Community Center and generous donations at the Community Fridge. And if you feel like exploring, it’s only a short drive west to Downtown Wilmington and east to the Delaware River.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
