Ashley offers suburban living near Wilmington’s city center
Ashley is a sprawling suburban community just outside of Wilmington. The city is the most populous in Delaware and is known as the Corporate Capital of America, where much of the country’s credit card banking companies have their headquarters. Distinct suburban homes sit a short distance from schools, parks and major Wilmington attractions.
Wide streets and sidewalks lined with ranch-style and Colonial homes
The community's suburban streets are fringed by leafy oak trees and manicured lawns. Wide streets and sidewalks are perfect for jogging and cycling, and the nearby Wilmington Transit Center puts downtown shopping and workplaces in Wilmington just under three miles away. Nearby freeways give locals a quick route to the Wilmington Airport five miles away. Single-family houses constitute Ashley’s diverse residential landscape and a small collection of town houses. Ranch-style homes are a common sight along neighborhood streets, whose open-concept interiors allow homeowners to take advantage of every inch of living space. There are also several different Cape Cod and Colonial-style houses, sporting similar simplistic architecture as the ranch-style, yet with community spaces built onto the first floor and bedrooms on the second floor. Most homes in Ashley feature brick exteriors. However, many unique homes have been built over the years, resulting in Ashley developing a unique visual aesthetic. Home prices in the area range from $270,000 for a small ranch-style home to as much as $500,000 for more recent builds.
Ashley High School has produced NFL athletes
Ashley is under the jurisdiction of the Red Clay Consolidated School District, with public school students beginning their academic careers at primary schools like Richardson Park Elementary; the school has an overall C plus Niche rating and teaches from kindergarten through fifth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as Stanton Middle and Thomas McKean High School. Both schools have overall C plus Niche ratings, and the latter high school has excellent athletic programs that have graduated players for NFL teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Parks and wetlands offer playgrounds, trails and wildlife views
Locals are just a short drive from lush neighborhood parks and exciting baseball games. Gordy Estates Park is a pocket park with playgrounds along Boxwood Road. To the south along East Newport Pike is Banning Regional Park, a vast green space featuring picnic shelters, soccer and baseball fields and playsets for the kids to enjoy. Walk through verdant wetlands in the Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge, home to 212 acres of freshwater tidal marshes and a range of flora and fauna, with educational exhibits available at the DuPont Environmental Education Center at the head of the park. Enjoy a ball game at Frawley Stadium, which is the home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks minor league team and features both stadium seating and a picnic area. Take a walk or bike ride along the Wilmington Riverwalk.
Public transit and freeways connect locals to retail and food
Public transit and nearby freeways put locals just a short drive away from surrounding retail and local restaurants. East down Maryland Avenue is the Wilmington Flea Market, with vendors selling everything from power tools and antiques to kid’s toys and secondhand clothing. Retailers like Save A Lot will keep locals stocked with fresh produce and other household essentials. There’s also a wealth of shopping and dining options along Ashley’s thoroughfares. Cosmo’s Diner is an established local favorite, a classic dinner serving up all-day breakfast as well as a selection of Greek dishes and American diner fare.
