Bayard Square
Neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware
New Castle County 19805
A mix of red brick rowhouses and twin homes
The neighborhood is densely populated by traditional rowhouses and twin homes that sit side-by-side along gridded sidewalk-lined streets. Most properties were built in the first half of the 20th century and feature red brick exteriors, small front porticos and narrow, fenced-in backyards with room for a small patio. While some homes have rear driveways and attached garages, street parking is the norm in Bayard Square. Prices for single-family homes range from around $225,000 to about $315,000. First-time homebuyers may qualify for the Delaware State Housing Authority’s Welcome Home program, which offers down payment and closing cost assistance to qualified applicants.Proximity to sports courts and trails in Canby Park
Barry and Union Triangle is the only green space in Bayard Square. The passive park features a small patch of grass tucked between the spot where South Union Street and South Lincoln Street split. With no spaces for active recreation in the neighborhood, residents travel about 2 miles south to Canby Park, which has an 18-hole disc golf course and a series of paved trails that wind around the park’s various sports courts. Less than a mile east of the neighborhood is Kosciusko Park, which features a basketball court, playground and a rocky hillside that reveals panoramic views of Wilmington’s skyline. Residents can also become members of Wilmington Turners, a social club with a variety of programming for all ages and a lush community garden in the heart of Bayard Square.Low student-teacher ratio in the Christina School District
Delaware follows a school choice program that allows families to apply to any public, charter or vocational-technical school outside of their assigned pathway. Bayard Square is one of the few neighborhoods in Wilmington assigned to attend the Christina School District, which earns a C-plus from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. The Bayard School serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a C-minus grade. Teens in the northern half of Bayard Square attend the B-rated Newark High School, while those further south attend the C-minus-rated Glasgow High School. Kids in sixth through 12th grade can enroll in AVID, a college-preparatory program designed to prepare students to attend a four-year college or university following their high school graduation. Private school options include St. Elizabeth High School, an independent day school operating alongside the neighborhood’s St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church. “Sometimes, people call this area St. Elizabeth’s too, since it’s right there,” Letizia says.Free movies in Kosciuszko and Canby Park
Wilmington’s City Cinema series invites locals to nearby green spaces to watch movies under the night sky while enjoying free snacks and popcorn. While the venues change each year, Kosciusko Park and Canby Park often host film screenings.I-95 offers convenient commutes to Philadelphia
Interstate 95 is about a mile east of Bayard Square. The thoroughfare connects residents to Philadelphia, around a 33-mile drive northeast. DART provides local bus service to the community, with stops along the neighborhood’s main streets. Residents are less than a 10-mile drive from Wilmington Airport, which is served by Avelo Airlines and provides nonstop flights to major cities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida. For trips to other destinations, Philadelphia International Airport is about a 20-mile drive away.Local favorites off Lancaster Avenue
Residents will find a variety of flavors in the neighborhood’s northeastern corner, tucked between Lancaster Avenue and Chestnut Street. La Tapatía is a Mexican grocery store selling a variety of specialty goods. Dino’s Ice Cream & Water Ice Store sells various sweet treats, while the Juice Joint 2.0 is a plant-based eatery known for its cold-pressed juices and made-to-order smoothies. Ristorante Attilio is a local institution that’s been serving homemade pasta and authentic Italian food in its wood-paneled dining room since 1985. For groceries, Great Valu Market is about a mile east along Lancaster Avenue in the Adams Four Shopping Center.Saint Francis Hospital includes a Level III trauma center
Residents are about a mile south of Saint Francis Hospital. The medical facility serves as a Level III trauma center and boasts the only hospital ambulance service in Delaware.
