Urban living near downtown Wilmington
Bayard Square is an urban community filled with blocks of rowhomes and walkable restaurants. “There are lots of brick rowhomes and tons of twin homes,” says Tony Letizia, a Realtor with VRA Realty who serves all of Delaware. “This area backs up to Canby Park, which is very well maintained.” Located in the heart of Wilmington, the neighborhood is less than 2 miles from the arts, culture and entertainment scene downtown. Besides proximity to the city’s local amenities, residents are just west of Interstate 95 and have convenient commutes into bigger cities such as Philadelphia.
A mix of red brick rowhouses and twin homes
The neighborhood is densely populated by traditional rowhouses and twin homes that sit side-by-side along gridded sidewalk-lined streets. Most properties were built in the first half of the 20th century and feature red brick exteriors, small front porticos and narrow, fenced-in backyards with room for a small patio. While some homes have rear driveways and attached garages, street parking is the norm in Bayard Square. Prices for single-family homes range from around $225,000 to about $315,000. First-time homebuyers may qualify for the Delaware State Housing Authority’s Welcome Home program, which offers down payment and closing cost assistance to qualified applicants.
These brick twin homes are very typical of what you would find on many Bayard Square streets.

Low student-teacher ratio in the Christina School District
Delaware follows a school choice program that allows families to apply to any public, charter or vocational-technical school outside of their assigned pathway. Bayard Square is one of the few neighborhoods in Wilmington assigned to attend the Christina School District, which earns a C-plus from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. The Bayard School serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a C-minus grade. Teens in the northern half of Bayard Square attend the B-rated Newark High School, while those further south attend the C-minus-rated Glasgow High School. Kids in sixth through 12th grade can enroll in AVID, a college-preparatory program designed to prepare students to attend a four-year college or university following their high school graduation. Private school options include St. Elizabeth High School, an independent day school operating alongside the neighborhood’s St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church. “Sometimes, people call this area St. Elizabeth’s too, since it’s right there,” Letizia says.
Glasgow High School is home of the dragons and has 784 students in grades 9-12.
497 students in grades 1-8 attend The Bayard School.

Residents can also become members of Wilmington Turners, a social club with a variety of programming for all ages and a lush community garden in the heart of Bayard Square.
