A bit of Wilmington history and more
Delaware Avenue folks relish their own piece of the great outdoors, not to mention trendy nightlife, tree-lined streets and a taste of America’s Gilded Age. Though the neighborhood is popular with renters these days, its historic preservation district showcases home-ownership styles of a century ago. Fly fishing alongside Interstate 95
Brandywine Park, with a creek by the same name, is one of the state’s best spots for casting a fly in search of muskie, shad, perch and bass – all within earshot of traffic zooming across the Interstate 95/State Route 202 bridge. "That's the appeal of living in the area," said Victoria Dickinson, a Realtor of more than 20 years with Patterson-Schwartz Real Estate. "A lot of my clients say they like to go fly fishing during their lunch hour.” Trails, monuments and playgrounds add to the allure of the 178 acres, as does the Brandywine Zoo. Not just fun for kids, though, the Zoo caters to the 21-and-older set with such events as Brew at the Zoo and Sip and Stroll.

‘I’d like a Hummingbird to Mars, please’
At the Trolley Tap House, a blue-and-yellow mural of flowing beer, trains and a smiling dog greets visitors. For an experience that harkens to Prohibition days, check behind Catherine Rooney’s Irish Pub for a secretive doorbell next to a black entry adorned with a hummingbird. Once inside, ask for the Hummingbird to Mars martini – a callback to a Texas senator who dubiously predicted in 1930 that the 18th Amendment would remain the law of the land. Nearby, the staff of BrewHaHa! Coffee shop will deliver on a less-intoxicating craving for locally roasted concoctions. For made-at-home meals, Acme Market in Trolley Square is a great place to start, though the Delaware Avenue Farmers Market at the corner of Delaware Avenue and Scott Street is open from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays for a little something special.
