Marshallton

Named so because it's where George Washington marshaled troops before the Battle of Brandywine, the suburban community of Marshallton is now a quiet residential area with every major store you could possibly need. Forested streets are lined with cozy suburban homes and paved walking paths leading to local schools and parks, with metro and freeway access providing quick commutes for workers.

Here you'll find a community of grassy suburban lawns and wide streets with tall, leafy maple and oak forests fluttering on the horizon during windy days. Walking paths and sidewalks feature landscaped front yards and little libraries where neighbors share books. Most locals live less than five miles from the neighborhood's vast parks and high-quality schools. A variety of homes are available along the winding suburban streets, from spacious single-family houses to luxury duplexes. Many single-family houses sport split-level design touches, a home style that allows for greater overall square footage without making the home appear too large for the street. The home's second floor is bracketed over the first. It features an open-concept floor plan to maximize every inch of living space. Ranch-style homes are another common area home style with open floor plans, though with various brick, stone and vinyl exteriors and expansive yards perfect for playing lawn games or cultivating a flower or vegetable garden. Marshallton's outskirts have a small collection of brand-new colonial and luxury duplexes featuring some of the same amenities found in the more established suburbs, like single and multi-car garages as well as proximity to nearby metro stations and major roadways. Your typical rambler or split-level house in Marshallton will cost anywhere from $200,000 to $450,000. At the same time, larger colonial-style homes and luxury duplexes have prices ranging from $500,000 to as much as $760,000.

Marshallton's walkways connect forested residential streets with expansive parks and green spaces that hold endless opportunities for recreation and enjoying the outdoors. The Delcastle Recreation Park is a vast green space with over 400 acres of athletic fields, including baseball diamonds, an outdoor hockey rink and walking trails leading through verdant forests that conceal historic ruins and buildings in its foliage. The area is surrounded by smaller green spaces like Sherwood Park and Arundel Park, which offer basketball and tennis courts and playgrounds for kids to enjoy.

Major retailers and local stores can be found all along thoroughfares like Kirkwood Highway. The local ACME grocery store will keep you stocked with fresh produce, bulk foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and other household necessities. Shopping malls like Kirkwood Plaza also have plenty of locally owned stores to browse through. Flip through stacks of comics at Comicmania, a popular comic store selling a wide variety of graphic novels and comics, including published and ongoing series. Goodboy Vinyl is another popular local spot that buys, sells and trades vinyl records, CDs and cassettes. When you're done shopping, head over to Limestone BBQ, a local BBQ joint that was voted Best BBQ in Delaware for its authentic Texas-style barbeque paired with Kentucky-style bourbon.

Public school students are served by the Red Clay Consolidated School District, beginning their academic careers at K-5 primary schools like Heritage Elementary, which has an overall A- Niche grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as Stanton Middle and Thomas McKean High Schools. The latter high school has athletic programs that have graduated players for NFL teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys.
