Sturdy homes close to downtown
With its distinctive midcentury homes, Northwest Wilmington has houses unlike anywhere in the city. "They've got good bones, stone and brick homes with good foundations," said Melinda Proctor, a local real estate agent with Re/Max Edge. "They don't make them like that as much anymore." Here, shoppers can find brick rowhouses with cozy front porches and flowers hanging from the banisters. Brick is the neighborhood's uniform and you'll see plenty of two-story red brick colonials throughout Northwest. Stone is a close second with distinctive Craftsman homes. Close to downtown, the community is near Interstate 95 and the Brandywine River, making Northwest one of the most convenient places for anyone who wants to be near urban attractions and cozy city parks. Proctor also notes that one of the major bonuses is Delaware's friendly business reputation. "Everything's easy in Wilmington," Proctor says. "The most appealing thing about the neighborhood is that it's close to the Pennsylvania state line and we have lower taxes. There's no sales tax in Delaware."
Midcentury charm on the city’s edge
Most of these sizable homes were built in the 1950s and 60s, making them even more desirable. "A lot of the homes have hardwood floors and formal, nice-sized rooms," Proctor says. Houses in the neighborhood start at around $200,000, and the market in Delaware is currently tight. However, prices don't get much higher, as recent sales have topped out at $355,000. Inventory is low across the state, especially in a neighborhood as close to downtown as Northwest, so expect it to be snatched up sooner rather than later.

Harlan Elementary School encourages innovation and teaches students about the future with its robotics club. Niche gives the elementary and middle school a C-plus and A rating, respectively. The early experience with technology can also benefit students once they arrive at Concord High School, which Niche gives an A- grade.

The building has a Spanish-style exterior and a long front room to sit and enjoy your beverage. Breakfast at Blume won the 2023 Diner's Choice Award from OpenTable. They serve New American cuisine and craft mocktails, and the restaurant is located in the Post House, a Wilmington landmark.
