Wilmington Manor, Delaware, expands northward from New Castle and is situated close to the riverside city’s historic surroundings. Wilmington Manor itself is a largely residential neighborhood halved by North Dupont Highway, along which sit a number of local restaurants, and the homes attract residents looking for more affordable housing options than they might find in larger metropolitan areas of the state. “The price point is on the lower end,” says Amanda Bradford, a local Realtor with Crown Homes Real Estate. “It’s a more affordable place to live. It’s super close to old New Castle, which is very scenic and beautiful. It’s a very pretty area.” Residents seeking recreation can look eastward to the waters of the river or within the neighborhood to one of several sizable parks, and drivers have easy access to multiple interstates that can take them to major nearby cities like Wilmington or to more distant destinations like Philadelphia.

Suburban streets on either side of Route 13
The residential real estate market in Wilmington Manor is composed primarily of single-family homes. “The style of homes are all kind of small, little box homes,” Bradford says. “They’re usually colonial-styles and the majority are detached single-family homes. They’re older homes, but they’re very cute.” Most housing prices in Wilmington Manor fall between $250,000 and $400,000, with colonial- and ranch-style homes among the most common architectural designs. The housing stock is supplemented by some split-levels and Cape Cods, as well. Due to the neighborhood’s proximity to the airport, residents may frequently hear the sounds of incoming or outgoing planes. Wilmington Manor has a CAP crime score of 4 out of 10, on par with the national average.

Transportation
Residents can get on the highway via an interchange of Route 13 and Interstate 295 on the north side of the neighborhood, with Interstates 95 and 495 close by. “It’s a straight shot,” Bradford says of commuting to other cities. “Anywhere you’re trying to get to in New Castle County, you can get there in 20 to 30 minutes.” A drive of less than 7 miles on I-95 takes motorists into central Wilmington, while a trip to Philadelphia covers between 30 and 40 miles northeast by way of several different routes. I-95 also takes drivers to Baltimore, which sits about 70 miles southwest of Wilmington Manor. DART buses run along Route 13. “It’s right next to the airport and it’s super conveniently located to all your major highways,” Bradford says. Wilmington Airport sits adjacent to the neighborhood and offers flights to destinations such as Orlando, Tampa and San Juan via Avel Airlines.
Local restaurants along North Dupont Highway
Locals often congregate towards North Dupont Highway, also designated as Route 13, to dine out or go shopping. “Right off Route 13, there’s a ton of stuff right there,” Bradford says. “There are lots of chain restaurants.” Eateries along the stretch of road cutting through Wilmington Manor include Chinese food at Ever Green, baked goods at New Castle Bagels and classics at the Dove Diner. The Dog House offers cheesesteaks and burgers alongside their signature hot dogs, while Wings to Go sits close by. The Legend Restaurant & Bakery is a local favorite and sits within Route 13’s southern interchange with West Basin Road.
Area stores include La Placita Mexican Groceries and the Local Card Shop. Grocery shoppers can visit the New Castle Farmers Market, or they can go to ShopRite of 1st State Plaza about 5 miles west of central Wilmington Manor. Residents can also head less than 4 miles south into New Castle for more dining options. “New Castle has more local stuff,” Bradford says. “Nora Lee’s is New Orleans-style food, and it’s really good. Jessup’s Tavern has its waiters dress up like they’re in the olden days, and there are a few coffee shops and teahouses right there.”

Recreation within Wilmington Manor and closer to the Delaware River
Chelsea Manor Park is one of the area’s largest green spaces, sprawling across nearly a dozen acres and offering baseball and softball diamonds, a soccer field and a playground. Lt. Joseph Szczerba Memorial Park at Penn Acres has a playground, basketball court and open areas, while Wilmington Manor Gardens Park features a baseball field, green spaces and a playground. The Suburban Little League ballclub also plays America’s pastime in the neighborhood. Residents can head south, towards the water, for more areas to get outside. “Battery Park has an entire walking trail that just borders the Delaware River,” Bradford says. “It’s a really pretty, very scenic area.”

History at the forefront in New Castle
The nearby New Castle is the main site for events in the area, including parades and festivals. New Castle is also the area’s center of historical preservation, as it served as the Colonial-era capital of the state. “There are definitely events that are held just because there’s a lot of cool restaurants down there,” Bradford says. “That whole area has a ton of historical spots. It’s basically where Delaware was founded. It’s very old and there’s a lot of beautiful architecture.” The annual A Day in Old New Castle celebration includes historical reenactments, tours of museums and other historic-themed events to commemorate the legacy of the area.
