Living a rural lifestyle in the New Hampshire hills
Formerly known as a lumber mill and sheep farming area, Wilmot is now a quiet rural neighborhood covered by acres of deciduous forest. Dotted with several ponds and close to the Ragged Mountain Ski Resort and the Mount Kearsarge Summit, the town is popular among outdoorsy residents. The neighborly atmosphere here is strong, with bandstand summer concerts, a farmers market, volunteer firefighters and a garden club that keeps the community calendar turning all year long. “Wilmot has a wonderful community, very close-knit,” says Kristin Angeli, a North Sutton native and Realtor with Angeli & Associates Real Estate who has been selling homes in Merrimack County for about 10 years. “They have a farmers market every Saturday in the summer, and the kids in Wilmot go to New London schools which is very desirable.” Though there isn’t much in the way of shops or restaurants, New London is only about 5 miles away. There is one preschool in town, and most students travel about 10 miles to study at highly-rated Kearsarge Regional Schools.

Wilmot community organizations and events
Wilmot’s seasonal farmers market is available from mid-June to the end of September at the Town Green. With locally grown food, crafts and other items, folks can support their neighbors while spending a day outside together. Throughout the year, the town’s garden club maintains local roads and buildings and organizes garden tours. They also host a plant sale on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to help neighbors support edible landscapes and permaculture at home. Wilmot’s Ladies’ Aid Society raises funds for local causes like the Wilmot Food Pantry, a senior lunch program and the volunteer fire department.

Many ponds and places to play in Wilmot
Wilmot is also known for its many large ponds, including Piper, Eagle and Butterfield Ponds. “They are dammed so they’re not very deep and no motorized boats are allowed, but they’re great for kayaking,” Angeli says. “There’s also a little beach at Tannery Pond.” Timmy Patten Beach at Tannery Pond is maintained by the Wilmot Association. That means it is open to all local Wilmot residents with a valid Transfer Station Sticker. The beach has a small playground, a dock and a few picnic tables. Though boating and ice fishing are done on larger lakes in other towns, “You’re still only minutes from places like Kezar Lake within a 20-to-30-minute drive,” Angeli says. Just down the road is Town Green, Wilmot’s gathering space next to the Town Office, which is a large green lawn and picnic spot. Town Green hosts the weekend farmers market and a summer concert series in July and August at the gazebo bandstand. The Wilmot Community Association on Village Road can be used for community or family events. South of town is Winslow State Park, which has a playground and a hiking trail that leads to the Mount Kearsarge Summit. Along the way, discerning eyes might spot a vibrant red eft, which is a term for the juvenile eastern newt.

Water, snow and overflowing estuaries
With its proximity to the hills and Mount Kearsarge, Wilmot is known to be in one of the cooler parts of New Hampshire. Residents living here may experience more snow and rain than usual, as well as very cold temperatures at night in winter. Also, because of its many ponds and waterways, low-lying land is known to overfill or flood during times of heavy rainfall.
