Views of Lake Isabella and the Kern River Valley

Set near the meeting point of the Kern River and Lake Isabella, Wofford Heights entices city dwellers in Bakersfield and other parts of California to head 50 miles northeast for a house at a higher elevation. “People who want a bit more land, and more seasons, will buy up there,” says Chandler Brown, a Realtor at Benchmark Real Estate Group in Bakersfield. Brown has worked in the local real estate market for more than five years. It’s 4 miles from the mountain town of Kernville, a small mountain town popular with tourists. While Kernville sits on the bank of the Kern River, Wofford Heights’ 2,300 residents have a geographic advantage of their own, says Matt Freeman, owner of Freeman’s Lakeside Realty. “Wofford Heights has panoramic views of the lake and valley,” says Freeman, a lifelong resident of the Kern River Valley, where Wofford Heights is located. “It’s one of the most affordable ZIP codes in the state.”

Getaway cabins near the Sierra Nevada Mountains

Wofford Heights is set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but the houses aren’t luxurious mountain estates. Rather, they’re doublewides, ranch homes and modest cabins. Homes here often are used for an escape from the city, Brown says. “Lots of people locally in Bakersfield have homes up there for vacation cabins.” Two-bedroom homes can be bought for just under $100,000, while cabins with porch views of Lake Isabella may fetch $300,000.

Hit the water at Lake Isabella

Wofford Heights Park is tucked between the eastern reaches of the community and the waters of the Kern River. The trapezoid of grass and trees contains a tree-shaded playground, as well as a few picnic tables. Depending on the water levels, the river may be a short walk away for those who want to walk along the water or cast a line. The river feeds into Lake Isabella, and kayaks, Jet Skis and fishing vessels launch from the marinas, such as French Gulch Marina. When locals want to stick indoors, The Reel Cinema on Wofford Boulevard has screened flicks for more than 50 years.

Antiques and art spaces on Wofford Boulevard

Wofford Boulevard acts as the community’s quaint commercial strip. Beer and live music flow at Kern River Tavern and Harry’s Bar, a pair of local watering holes. Shelves of produce and a small deli draw shoppers to Charlie’s Market. Further South on Wofford Boulevard, a quirky mix of furniture and tchotchkes beckon passing motorists to stop at Mustard Seed Ranch Antiques and Collectibles. Keeping with that funky vibe, the Kern River Valley Art Association in 2023 converted a defunct gas station on Wofford Boulevard into Alchemy, a space for learning to turn pulp into homemade paper and other art programs. The nearest supermarket is Vons, 8 miles away in Lake Isabella, while the closest hospital is all the way in Bakersfield.

Wallace Middle School hosts Winter Camp for kids

There are no public schools in Wofford Heights, so students must travel to communities to the north or south to take classes. Three miles north is Kernville Elementary School, which earns a Niche grade of C. Eight miles south, sixth, seventh and eighth graders may attend Wallace Middle School, also graded a C. The Woodrow Wallace Middle School campus hosts an annual Winter Camp in January, open to all kids in the district who want to cook, craft art projects and play games for a week. Kern Valley High School is the highest-rated school Wofford Heights children can attend, as it’s graded a B-minus.

Buses and highways connect to Bakersfield

The Kern Transit bus motors up and down State Route 155 between the communities of Kernville and Lake Isabella, with several stops in between in Wofford Heights. Otherwise, car is the best way to get around, especially for cruising down State Route 178 to Bakersfield, 50 miles away. Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield flies to major cities across the U.S.

Bakersfield ranks high for pollution

Homebuyers should note the American Lung Association ranks Bakersfield the worst metro in the nation for year-round particle pollution and short-term particle pollution. Plus, the association found Bakersfield has the third-highest smog levels in the U.S. A large oil and gas industry flourishes in the city. While Wofford Heights is part of the same metro area, the community is 50 miles outside of Bakersfield, where the oil and gas works is concentrated.
