Birdwatching, water play and golf

Nature lovers can watch bald eagles, blue herons and foxes in the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest remaining salt marshes in the mid-Atlantic region, 18 miles northeast near the Delaware Bay. The Air Mobility Command Museum features aircraft from history in a refurbished World War II hangar in Dover. History buffs can tour the John Dickinson Plantation, a Georgian mansion built around 1739. The Woodside United Methodist Church is a late Gothic Revival house of worship in the town’s center. Built in 1889, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an essential piece of regional culture.

The Killens Pond Water Park in Felton has an array of winding water slides, splash pads and pools for all ages. One local says even canines can swim at Killens Pond. “It gets pretty busy,” says Derrian Shinn, a Property Manager who works nearby at Sunset Village Apartments. “On the last day of the park year, they open it up for dogs because they’re going to drain it anyway.” Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club is an event space and public 18-hole golf course open year-round and is a must-play for golfers in the area. Kids will enjoy the trip to Brecknock County Park, which offers uniquely built trails through the forest and a wooden playground resembling a medieval village. Four miles north, the park also has sports fields, hard courts and a volleyball court.

Dover Days and the Delaware State Fair

Arts in the Park is a summer concert series organized by the Kent County Public Library and held at Brecknock County Park. Locals bring blankets and chairs to the lawn to see the performance. The Dover Days Festival & Parade is a tradition that has lasted over nine decades. It begins with fireworks at dusk, and it turns into a two-day festival with food truck vendors and a parade celebrating the history and heritage of Delaware. The Buccaneer Bash is a pirate-themed celebration on Memorial Day weekend with a costume contest, live music and craft vendors at the Maritime Museum in Bowers Beach, 12 miles east.

Those feeling lucky can try their luck on the slot machines or choose a stallion to cross the finish line at the Harrington Raceway and Casino. Each year, the summer Delaware State Fair hosts a stampede rodeo, ice skating, live music and livestock auctions in Harrington, 11 miles south. Motorsport enthusiasts can visit the Dover Motor Speedway to watch racecars screech around the NASCAR track.

Access to Dover and other major cities

Woodside is a car-dependent community. Drivers can travel along state Route 13 to get to Dover, about 7 miles north. Just outside of town, there is a Delaware Authority for Regional Transit bus stop, and riders can connect to locations throughout Delaware. The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore are all within a 90-mile drive.
