Classic Worcester neighborhood convenient to downtown
With picturesque colonial and Cape Cod Homes, sloping front lawns and hilly roadways, North Lincoln Street is a residential Worcester neighborhood that embraces its classic New England style. Just north of I-290, the neighborhood is popular among commuters looking for convenience to downtown with some separation from the city. "It's an affordable area, and there's a lot of shopping and services over there, plus great access. You can be downtown in ten minutes," says Erin Zamarro, associate broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial NRT.
Cape Cods, Colonials and more New England styles
North Lincoln Street's homes represent traditional New England architectural styles of the late 1800s and early 1900s. These homes typically cost between $400,000 and $500,000, with modest, three-bedroom ranches, cape cods and gambrel-style homes representing the lower end and larger colonials and the occasional triple-decker representing the higher end. Most residents rent their homes. Many homes have small front yards, tidy landscaping and trees that offer privacy between neighbors. Stone walls and paved front walkways with stairs are also common front yard elements.
Burncoat Park, Green Hill Park and more nearby
In the wintertime, people come from the surrounding areas to sled at Burncoat Park, a 26-acre community greenspace with a sloping hill. When the snow melts, neighbors visit the park for its ponds, baseball diamond and field used for fall football and spring soccer. Nearby, Dodge Park has a gazebo and nature trails for hiking through the woods. Just south of the neighborhood across I-290, Worcester's largest park, Green Hill Park, has a golf course, a petting zoo, playgrounds, trails and the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Additionally, at the intersection of Clark Street and Tacoma Street, just northeast of the neighborhood, "they're going to build a new playground, Tacoma Street Playground. There's a park there now, but that's going to be new," Zamarro says. The renovation project will include a new playground, splash park and multi-use fields.
Big box stores in Lincoln Plaza
"There are large plazas for one-stop shopping. You have the big box type of stores over there," Zamarro says. Lincoln Plaza has everything residents need, including Target, Aldi, TJ Maxx & Home Goods, Lowe's Home Improvement and more. Restaurants largely include chains like Five Guys and Taco Bell, but local spots satisfy customers as well. One popular choice is Golden House Grill, which serves Mediterranean dishes, including kabob, beef and chicken shawarma, and falafel wraps.
Students attend Worcester Public Schools
Students may attend either the Lincoln Street School or Wawecus Road School, both of which earned C grades from Niche, for kindergarten through sixth grade. Students then continue to Burncoat Middle School and Burncoat High School, both with C-plus grades. The middle and high schools offer an arts-focused magnet program where students can specialize in theater, dance, music and visual arts.
Events in downtown Worcester
Worcester has deep roots in manufacturing, and the end of the industrial age in the early 20th century hurt the city's economy. But Worcester has seen a revitalization in the 21st century with top-tier restaurants, performing arts venues and professional sports. "People in North Lincoln Street are definitely going downtown on the weekend," Zamarro says. Locals can visit Polar Park stadium to catch a Worcester Red Sox baseball game, enjoy an off-Broadway show at Hanover Theatre, or listen to a concert at The Palladium.
Commuting from North Lincoln Street and nearby facilities
Just north of I-290, North Lincoln Street is convenient to downtown Worcester and top employers. "People are definitely commuting. One of the larger employers in the city, Hanover Insurance, is there, and Lincoln Street is basically a straight shot to downtown. It's pretty easy to take a bus straight to downtown where there's a hub for buses," Zamarro says. "Worcester has fare-free transit right now. They're definitely trying to encourage people to use public transportation." Worcester buses will remain fare-free until June 2024. North Lincoln Street is also just 3 miles north of the Worcester Union Station, where residents can catch the commuter rail to Boston. North Lincoln Street is also less than 3 miles from UMass Memorial Medical Center and 7 miles from Worcester Regional Airport.
