Summit provides a quiet home base near busier cities

The Summit neighborhood is around 5 miles north of downtown Worcester, right on the cusp of the Burncoat area and West Boylston. “It’s a very affordable side of town,” says Sabrina Kelsey, an agent with Wachusett Real Estate who has sold in Worcester since 2013. “There are very involved neighborhood groups that sponsor events.” Summit not only offers a sense of community — it’s also close to big-box stores and Interstate 90, bringing accessibility to suburbia.

New England architecture and lower prices

The housing market primarily consists of duplexes with colonial-inspired architecture and single-family Cape Cods and Victorians. Lots sit closely together on suburban streets but provide enough space for front lawns and backyards. Cars often park in driveways and garages, and mature oak trees line the roads. Prices typically range from $250,000 to $500,000, which is lower than in other Worcester neighborhoods, like Salisbury Street , where prices start at $360,000 and reach $950,000.

Worcester Public Schools and applying to other districts

Children in Summit are zoned for Worcester Public Schools. Norrback Avenue School serves kindergarten through fifth grade and earns a C-plus rating from Niche, while Burncoat Middle receives a B-minus. Burncoat High scores a C-plus, and high schoolers can also participate in career and technical education programs. Students may apply to West Boylston Public Schools, a B-plus-rated district, through the Massachusetts interdistrict school choice program. “Older kids can do school choice to West Boylston because it’s so close,” Kelsey says. “I think a lot of parents try to get their kids into those schools from all over the city.” Bancroft School, a private option for prekindergarten through Grade 12, is within 2 miles. Niche gives it an A-plus and ranks it No. 5 in the state.

Collaborating with Burncoat for events and community groups

Summit residents often participate in Burncoat events and activities. “There are a bunch of Burncoat groups, and Burncoat is the bigger area that Summit falls into,” Kelsey says. “They do tree decorating, they do a block party, they do all sorts of stuff.” The tree decorating tradition started during the COVID pandemic and continues to bring people together during the holidays. The Burncoat Center for Arts and Wellness offers crafting classes, summer programs for kids and seasonal events, like visits with Santa. For larger gatherings, people go into the heart of Worcester. Some popular celebrations in the city include a fireworks show and live music on July Fourth and the Festival of Lights during Christmas.

Easy access to big-box shopping and restaurants

One of Summit’s main draws is its proximity to commercial development. “There are supermarkets and a Walmart not too far,” Kelsey says. A Walgreens is also in the neighborhood, and Stop & Shop is within 1 mile. Boylston Street houses many shopping centers with fast-food spots and sit-down restaurants. O’Connor’s is decked out in Irish décor and serves pub fare and New England seafood. Locals visit Lou Roc's Diner for a casual breakfast or lunch and The Mill 185 for Italian American dishes.

Nearby recreation, from athletic facilities to water sports

Summit sits within a few miles of numerous parks and outdoor spaces. The neighborhood is 2 miles from the wooded trails at Bovenzi Conservation Park, the Little League diamonds at Kendrick Field and Shore Park on Indian Lake. The lake has a sandy coastline and accommodates fishing and boating, both motorized and nonmotorized. Summit is also within 10 miles of outdoor attractions in Boylston, like the Wachusett Reservoir and the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. Worcester Country Club, located 1 mile away, features a private golf course and a seasonal pool.

Transportation options around Worcester County

Interstate 190 runs through the neighborhood and heads 5 miles south to Worcester’s downtown attractions, commercial development and hospitals. The Worcester Regional Transit Authority provides bus stops on Mountain and Boylston streets, and the Framingham/Worcester Line commuter rail leads from downtown Worcester to Boston, a 45-mile trip. Summit is 10 miles from the Worcester Regional Airport, which offers direct flights to several major East Coast cities.
