Peach tree farms and a freight railroad still exist in Wyoming
Wyoming is a lively small town, less than 4 miles south of Dover. The Kent County community thrived in the 19th century as Delaware’s “Peach Center,” home to farms, canneries and a freight railroad that shipped the fruit around the country. Today, Fifer Orchards still grows peaches, and a freight line continues to run through the area. The town's history is also preserved with the annual Peach Festival, one of several family-friendly activities. “Wyoming is super wholesome,” says Lydia Ragonese, a Realtor with Compass who also grew up in Wyoming. “It’s got places to pick your own fruit, there’s an ice cream parlor and a small farmers market during the summer.” Aside from fresh fruit and locally owned businesses, residents have easy access to U.S. Route 13 and the Dover Air Force Base, about 6 miles east.

Century-old homes and new builds are available
Wyoming’s oldest homes include cottages and Colonial Revivals built between the 1800s and the mid-20th century. New Traditionals from the 2010s and 2020s are also common. Oak and elm trees shade modest lots near the town’s center, while properties on the outskirts often sit on wheat and corn crops. Prices can range from about $105,000 to around $400,000, depending on a house’s age, size and condition. The area also has a few duplexes and townhouses, typically costing between $230,000 and $315,000.

Railroad Avenue is home to a freight line and the Peach Festival
The Delmarva Central Railroad runs along Railroad Avenue at Wyoming's core. When trains pass through, traffic briefly stops at intersecting roads, and locals can hear whistles and chugging. Part of the avenue shuts down to car traffic on the first Saturday of August for the Peach Festival, which attracts around 12,000 people annually. Visitors can shop at craft vendors, buy fresh produce and enjoy peach-flavored food, including ice cream from Tre Sorelle Dolce. “They only have that flavor during the festival, and they give it out for free all day,” Ragonese says. There’s a baking competition where desserts like peach pie and peach cobbler compete for a cash prize. Bands perform on the train platform, originally built in 1872. Locals also visit Railroad Avenue for the Wyoming Station Farmers Market, held every other Saturday between May and September.

Fifer Orchards is a longstanding local business
Peach tree groves, sunflower fields and other produce make up Fifer Orchards, a "u-pick farm" established in 1919. The store sells eggs, baked goods and meat between April and December, while the onsite restaurant serves sandwiches and ice cream year-round. Locals can pick pumpkins, run through corn mazes and pet farm animals during the farm’s Fall Fest. “Every kid who grew up in the Dover area has a memory of visiting Fifer when they were little,” Ragonese says.

Wyoming has a bar, an ice cream shop and a market
A few antique shops, convenience stores and restaurants are in town. Pool tables and beer signs fill Brown’s, a tavern with soups, salads and sandwiches on the menu. Tre Sorelle Dolce is an ice cream shop with a mini golf course in the summer and a synthetic ice skating rink every winter. Camden Wyoming Market has been the town’s go-to deli, butcher and bakery since 1975. “People who work there know the name of just about every customer because it’s been around for so long,” Ragonese says. For big grocery trips, stores like Walmart Supercenter and Aldi are along U.S. Route 13, less than 2 miles east.

There’s a town park and a Little League
The town’s recreation spaces include Wyoming Park, which has a playground, picnic tables and a walking path alongside Wyoming Pond. The Camden-Wyoming Little League plays games at the baseball diamonds in the southern part of town. Kids can run around the wooden, castle-themed playground at Brecknock County Park, about 2 miles east. Several houses of worship are also here, including the Wyoming United Methodist Church on the town’s northern edge.

Many residents work at the Dover Air Force Base
Though some streets have sidewalks, Wyoming is a car-dependent community. New Burton Road reaches downtown Dover, home to the Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus. The Dover Air Force Base employs around 11,000 people, many of whom live in Wyoming. “Everybody in town works at the base or knows someone who works there,” Ragonese says. A 55-mile drive north on state Route 1 reaches Wilmington, while a 55-mile drive south on Route 13 leads to Salisbury. Regional airports are in both cities, and a general aviation airport is on Wyoming’s western side. Dart First State offers bus rides to Dover and other Kent County towns.
