Northwest Yonkers
Views of the Hudson River from condos and single-family homes
The neighborhood is hilly and mountainous, starting at the waterfront and rising steadily, ensuring many homes have windows facing the sun as it sets over the Hudson River, nicknamed ‘America’s Rhine.’ Homes are organized within a residential pocket bordered by industrial and commercial areas to the east, and a shopping mall and nature preserve to the north. Victorian, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and custom homes range from $700,000 to over $1 million, while split-level, minimal traditional and Cape Cod styles range from $400,000 to $675,000. Multifamily homes range from $700,000 to over $1 million. Co-ops are organized in large brick buildings, costing $375,000 to $650,000. Condos and townhouses range from $400,000 to $675,000.Commuters use Greystone and Glenwood train stations
Saw Mill River Parkway cuts through the area, and commuters use the roadway to reach New York City in about an hour. “Now, if you’re a commuter and don’t have a car but want to get into the city,” says Aboagye. “Take the six bus to the waterfront and catch the train.” Northwest Yonkers has two train stations, Greystone to the north and Glenwood to the south; both reach the city in less than an hour on the Hudson line. Interstate 87 borders the area and leads to the Ridge Hill mall and LaGuardia Airport, 18 miles away. St. John’s Riverside Hospital is in the region and provides medical services. Houses of worship can be found in and around the area, such as Seven Hills Church, Christ the King Church and Iglesia Cristiana Segunda Siloe for religious services.Early college program at Gorton High School
Yonkers Public Schools, receiving a B from Niche, serves the area. The school district practices choice enrollment, meaning that children are not zoned based on where they live and may apply to attend any school. Schools in the area are School 16 for prekindergarten through eighth grade and Charles E. Gorton High School. Both receive a B-minus. Gorton High has an early college program that partners with local universities to give students a head start on higher education.Dining at Boyce Thompson Center
Small, hip spots like the Taco Project operate alongside medical offices and a hospital in the Boyce Thompson Center, a massive renovated prewar factory. Boro6 Wine Bar, just a half mile into Hastings-on-Hudson, is run by a former Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia executive and a chef who worked with New York City restaurateur Danny Meyer. The restaurant serves upscale dishes, wine and craft cocktails. Eater Magazine named it one of the best restaurants in Westchester. Ridge Hill, 3 miles away, has a Whole Foods and recreational activities like the Sky Zone trampoline park. The Mall at Cross County, 5 miles away, offers more shopping and dining opportunities. For full restocks, Costco is 3 miles away.Green spaces along the Hudson River
Next door to the Boyce Thompson Center, the Lenoir Preserve is a 40-acre greenspace with a nature center and hiking trails. The preserve is popular with bird and butterfly watchers. Nearby, the public Untermyer Gardens Conservancy has six gardens with colorful flora with art and architecture mixed in. Further south, the Hudson River Museum next to Trevor Park is a venue for all ages with history, science and art exhibits.Live music on the waterfront
“In Yonkers, there’s lots of events if you’re up to date on social media pages,” says Aboagye. “The riverfront is literally down the hill and sometimes they do live performances there if the weather is nice.” At the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront, bands play for free on Friday nights from June to August.
