Ogunquit is popular with tourists
Hugged by miles of white-sand beaches, Ogunquit lives up to its name, which means "a beautiful place by the sea" in the indigenous Abenaki language. The community has a vintage appeal and its population hasn't changed much over the years either, jumping to just 1,598 in 2024 from 1,577 in 2020. "Not many people actually reside in Ogunquit because it's more taken over by tourists," says Jackie Roberts, a server at a local family-owned Mediterranean restaurant, The Front Yard. With an average snowfall of nearly 50 inches, it gets pretty cold here. Many restaurants close when the snowbirds head out for the winter. Then, when the sun returns, Ogunquit's beaches and quaint shopping areas are bustling again with waves of visitors and part-time neighbors.

Cliffside hikes along Marginal Way
Ogunquit's Marginal Way is a trail stretching over a mile along the rocky coast. Ogunquit Beach is accessible from the path and offers a wide-open space for sand volleyball, though it's often packed during the warmer months. North of Ogunquit Beach is Footbridge Beach. Considered a hidden gem by locals, it's less touristy than others. The inland Ogunquit Dog Park offers plenty of space for furry friends to roam. Cape Neddick Country Club provides a private course.

A 1930s charm in Ogunquit
Craftsmans, Cape Cods, Victorians and custom builds create Ogunquit's architectural fabric. Properties trace back as early as 1910, and while new construction is rare, it's still available, often modeling a rustic farmhouse or New England look. "They have certain regulations where older buildings can't be torn down," says Realtor George Wilson of Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based Aland Realty. "It still looks like it did in 1935." Lot sizes here are spacious, even close to the coast, with homes resting on a quarter of an acre to over 2 acres or more. Properties a short walk to the ocean can go for around $900,000 to over $4 million and sometimes even above $7 million. Homes farther inland also rise to over $1 million but start in the $500,000s. Crime is below average here, by national standards, at 2 out of 10 versus 4 out of 10 on the CAP Index Crime Score.

Perkins Cove and the Village
The Marginal Way path ends at Perkins Cove, a former artists' colony with a marina. Its seaside shops in gray shingle houses are connected to inns by a footbridge. Some visit for candlelit dinners with waterfront views at M.C. Perkins Cove restaurant and for homemade saltwater taffy from Perkins Cove Candies. They might also snag beachy clothes from the Nothing Better than Doing Nothing apparel store. The Village, in downtown Ogunquit, is known for its LGBTQ-owned bed and breakfasts and nightlife spots, including The Front Porch Piano Bar & Restaurant. The Village Food Market is also downtown for groceries.

People can walk almost anywhere in Ogunquit, which is ideal since parking is hard to find. Traffic is also heavy during the peak of tourist season, from June to October. Interstate 95 and Route 1 flow through town for general commuting needs. Several York Hospital branches are within 10 miles, including one in Wells, just over 5 miles away.
Ogunquit experiences its share of coastal storms. In 2024, $1 million was approved toward the repair of Marginal Way, which incurred damages after several storms passed through in January of that year. This was added to a pot of $2 million already set aside for the path's repair after it weathered an earlier storm in 2018. The public works crew responsible for snow removal is on call 24 hours a day.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
