Harbor Gateway offers fast access to South Bay amenities and LA travel
As its name suggests, Harbor Gateway functions as the gateway to LA’s harbor region, which is comprised of the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach. That might not seem like a big deal for non-mariners, but what it actually means is that the neighborhood is one of the most centrally located spots in Los Angeles, offering direct routes not only to the Harbor Region but to the South Bay Cities and Central LA. “It’s technically part of Los Angeles, so you don’t get South Bay schools, but otherwise you get nearly all the benefits of living in South Bay,” according to local Realtor Garrison Comstock. “The beaches, the restaurants, the shopping — it’s all right there.” Harbor Gateway is a perfect landing spot for those who need to get around LA quickly but want to come home to a quiet suburban lifestyle.
Residential areas feel like South Bay but prices tend to be lower
The neighborhood borders more commercial areas like West Rancho Dominguez, but the residential blocks of Harbor Gateway feel pretty similar to the rest of the South Bay area. Like most South Bay neighborhoods, Harbor Gateway’s sun-drenched streets are lined with mid-century homes, most of which have been substantially remodeled and expanded to feature layouts between 1300 and 2000 square feet. There are also a fair number of more modern condos and townhomes in the neighborhood. The neighborhood’s houses are significantly less expensive than what you’re likely to find closer to the coast, with local single-family homes ranging from $600,000 to just under a million.
Dining options include Italian pastries and Hawaiian fare
As for the local retail scene, shops and restaurants are scattered liberally along the neighborhood’s 5-mile length. Residents can pick up groceries at one of the many nearby supermarkets, including popular Asian grocers Tokyo Central and 99 Ranch Market. Looking to pick up some everyday necessities? Harbor Gateway is home to a variety of department stores, from Sam’s Club and Walmart to Home Depot. Dining options range from authentic Italian deli and bakery Giuliano’s, which offers an amazing selection of pastries, sandwiches and wines, or well-loved local Hawaiian eatery Cherrystones.
Rosecrans Park offers sports fields and a community rec center
When locals want to get outdoors — but don’t feel like driving 10 minutes to El Segundo Beach — they can swing by Rosecrans Park and rec center, where they’ll find everything from a playground to basketball courts to a full-sized and well-maintained soccer field.
Students attend LAUSD schools with specialized programs
Harbor Gateway’s public schools overlap with neighboring Gardena, and both areas are administered by LA Unified School District. Gardena High School — despite the name, it’s located in Harbor Gateway — offers students a variety of academic pathways, including engineering and robotics, global business, law and creative arts. Younger students may attend institutions like Meyler Street Elementary or White Middle School.
Access to I-105 and about 10 miles from LAX
Harbor Gateway is bounded by interstates 105, 110 and 405, which might not seem important if you’re not from LA. What it means for locals is that they’re about 10 miles from LAX, the beach, and the employers of Torrance and Hawthorne, and less than 20 minutes from both Downtown LA and Downtown Long Beach.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
