Midtown Memphis’ eccentric character
Austin Rowe never knows what he might see around the Midtown Memphis neighborhood. A team lead at real estate firm Rowe Wyse Partners at Parks, Rowe is a 10-year resident of Midtown. In that time, Rowe has seen everything around the neighborhood from stately 100-year-old homes to a 60-year-old man with purple hair, a pink tank top and a wizard’s staff walking the sidewalk. “Midtown is just weird,” Rowe says. “I couldn’t live anywhere else in Memphis.” This eccentric character is reflective of Midtown, a mashup of historical residential streets and an entertainment district anchored by Overton Square. A restaurant and shopping area, Overton Square is also surrounded by theaters and music venues that prove locals don’t need to hang out on Beale Street to enjoy Memphis’ cultural scene.

Grab a meal and a concert at Lafayette’s Music Room
Midtown is outside the touristy areas of downtown Memphis, but the neighborhood’s restaurants are renowned enough to draw visitors. More than 100 barbecue joints pepper the city, but The Bar-B-Q Shop stands out because of its 50-year-old, scratch-made sauce recipe. Po boys and other Southern grub come with a side of live music at Historic Lafayette’s Music Room. Musicians perform seven nights a week at the two-story restaurant that first opened in 1972. Boutiques such as The Ivory Closet also huddle around Overton Square. Residents don’t have to leave the neighborhood for shopping essentials, as Kroger and The Home Depot sit in Midtown. Emergency room visits or scheduled doctor appointments are in quick reach, as Methodist University Hospital is next door to Midtown. Also a performing arts hub, the neighborhood contains 10 theaters. They include Playhouse On The Square, a theater company performing in Memphis since the ‘70s, and Hattiloo Theatre, an independent African-American theater that’s the only one of its kind in the state.

Early 20th-century architecture in Midtown
Midtown Memphis was developed as the city expanded eastward in the early 1900s, and many of the homes there have stood for more than a century. Some houses are Greek Revival estates with limestone columns and two-story porticos, but the home styles vary widely, Rowe explains. “You have big, stately places that are on Belvedere and Peabody. One block over, you may have some Foursquares that have three or four bedrooms. Maybe another block over, you get down to a three-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow.” Many homes fall within historic districts, so homeowners who want to renovate exteriors may face regulatory hurdles. Single-family homes may cost between $80,000 for a three-bedroom Tudor and $1 million for a five-bedroom Greek Revival house. There are a few condo complexes as well. One-bedroom units start around $60,000, while three-bedroom condos next to Overton Park sell in the mid-$300,000s.

Golf, art and zoo animals at Overton Park
Midtown hosts one of the city’s most versatile green spaces: Overton Park. Among its 340 acres, park goers hike along a 1-mile trail blazed through an old-growth forest, play with their dogs off-leash at Overton Bark and tee off on rounds of golf at Overton Park 9. If the summer heat or chilly winter air make Overton Park’s playgrounds or bike paths untenable, visitors can duck inside the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Located in the park, the museum houses 10,000 works of art. Meanwhile, monkeys and rhinos reside within the gates of the Memphis Zoo on the north end of the park.

Snowden School offers rigorous middle school programs
Two campuses operated by Memphis-Shelby County Schools border the neighborhood. One is Snowden School, a school for prekindergartners through eighth graders that Niche gives a grade of C. Parents have the choice of enrolling their children in Snowden’s Optional Program. This program exposes middle schoolers to coursework meant to prepare them for college. After eighth grade, students can go just outside the neighborhood to take classes at Central High School, graded a C-plus.

Midtown Memphis offers plenty of bus stops throughout the neighborhood.
Trolley and interstates connect to Memphis
Interstate 40 and Interstate 69 meet near the west side of the neighborhood, so motorists can cruise on and navigate around Memphis. The Main Street Trolley stops in Midtown Memphis, taking riders west to the heart of downtown. Flights take off at Memphis International Airport, 8 miles to the south. It’s one of the busiest airports in the world, and Midtown residents complain of occasional overhead noise from planes.
