An urban neighborhood on the Miami River close to popular destinations

Melrose Heights is a mixed-use urban neighborhood located along the Miami River industrial corridor. Melrose Heights is about two-thirds commercial, and three-quarters of its residents rent. There are plenty of service-oriented jobs in the neighborhood, and blue-collar employment options are prominent in and around Melrose Heights. The latter includes neighboring Allapattah’s industrial core on one side, and Miami International Airport on the other.

Older, more affordable homes

Small homes are built close together on streets that offer a mix of driveways and street parking. Palms and other mature trees add curb appeal. Prices range from the mid-$300,000s to the high $500,000s. “Prices are lower because the properties are older, but some people buy and rebuild,” says Elisa Hernandez, who has sold homes in the neighborhood. Potential residents should be aware of noise and traffic delays caused by proximity to the airport. In addition, Miami Casino is a neighborhood attraction that can contribute to both factors.

Access to Metrorail, and close to Jackson Memorial Hospital

The neighborhood offers appealing access to public transportation for travel around Greater Miami. The Miami-Dade Transit Central Bus Facility is in Melrose Heights. Nearby Metrorail stations include:

  • Hialeah Market
  • Earlington Heights
  • Allapattah
  • Santa Clara
  • UHealth/Jackson
Hernandez says Jackson Memorial Hospital, about 4 miles away, is a big draw for those moving to the area, and Melrose Heights is conveniently located to other local points of interest for work and play. Miami International is just minutes away via the Airport Expressway, which forms the neighborhood’s northern border. The expressway, also known as State Road 112, connects residents to nearby Interstate 95, which leads directly to Downtown Miami about 7 miles away. It’s about a 15-minute drive to Wynwood, a trendy arts district, and within 30 minutes of the beach.

Latin-inspired eateries, grocers and more

Melrose Heights is not as strongly identified with its cultural heritage as neighboring Allapattah, but Latin-inspired eateries and grocers are concentrated along a pair of commercial corridors. El Palacio de los Jugos, a popular Cuban chain, and La Granja, a popular Peruvian chain, are highlights. “The good thing about the area is that it’s a mix,” Hernandez says. “You’ve got Latin, American, Asian. All kinds of food.” For other food-related needs, Ricky’s Meats & Deli on the crowded 27th Avenue corridor is a third-generation wholesale butcher that has been serving the area for more than 30 years.
