As a western portion of Little Havana, West Flagler is alive with Cuban culture while creating its own identity. It’s named for the major throughway that bisects it — West Flagler Street — but Cuban life is everywhere, from the active Cuban culinary scene to the Hispanic products offered at smaller grocery stores. “I know people who have lived here their whole lives without learning English because they don’t have to,” shares Islara Souto, the collective Impact Coordinator at Healthy Little Havana, a local nonprofit aiming to improve the neighborhood through comprehensive initiatives.
Ventanitas and abuela-style food in West Flagler
At Centro City Plaza, residents can shop for groceries at Target. At Plaza De Leon, a Publix provides an additional option for buying groceries. “Stores are very Hispanic centered,” Souto says. Chains often carry imported goods and products. Presidente Supermarket is a Florida chain founded in Miami by a Cuban-American family, bringing more Latin American brands to the state with a location right in West Flagler. Botanica Nena is local destination that sells religious items, herbs and candles, helping residents connect with their spirituality. The ventanitas are walk-up windows that usually sell Cuban coffee. The original ventanita is credited to Versailles Restaurant Cuban Cuisine, a famous spot with a French-inspired interior. La Carreta Restaurant serves abuela-style Cuban food, and while it has locations across the city, the one in West Flagler is the original, serving the community since 1976.

Attend Miami's best art festivals
West Flagler’s central location allows residents to enjoy events across Miami, including the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, which has been showcasing artists for almost 60 years. Home prices in West Flagler can range from $225,000 to $900,000. “The further southwest you go, things are traditionally less expensive,” Souto explains. The housing market in West Flagler can move quickly. Because of its proximity to downtown and Little Havana’s cultural attractions, it is popular with tourists. “Many homes are transformed into long-term rentals for tourists,” says Souto. Houses may remain off the market longer and sell faster once listed.

West Flagler is home to some creative parks, like Coral Nook Circle Park, which is a spot of green landscaping and walking trails within a traffic circle. Shenandoah Park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool alongside its walking trails and basketball courts.

Most restaurants and bakeries line Calle Ocho. The sidewalks in West Flagler are wide, encouraging walking throughout the neighborhood. Healthy Little Havana even recently advocated for more pedestrian-safe zones throughout Little Havana to support walking. As Little Havana grows, West Flagler becomes more active. “Everything in Miami is spreading west,” Souto says. “It’s becoming the center of everything.”

Kensington Park Elementary School is a public K-5 with a Niche rating of C-plus. It offers an Extended Foreign Language Program to students, where they learn content in English and a targeted language to promote bilingualism. Shenandoah Middle School earns a B-minus from Niche. Awarded a B-plus from Niche, Miami Senior High School functions out of a historical building and serves as a major magnet for the surrounding area. Its legal and public affairs program introduces students to the law and court systems, while the teaching program focuses on the science behind teaching.
