Rufus King
Tudors and bungalows from the early 20th century
Homes here date to before World War II. Bungalows of various facades sit next to Tudors of brick and stone, as well as a handful of Cape Cods and Colonials. Lawns are petite and neatly landscaped. The streets are quiet and wide, lined with sidewalks and mature trees. Residents can park on the roads if needed, but many homes include detached garages, accessible from alleyways. Prices range from $63,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom fixer-upper to $245,000 for a three- or four-bedroom with recent renovations and a finished basement. As for crime, Rufus King scores a 5 out of 10 on the CAP Index, slightly above the national average of 4.Milwaukee Public Schools serve area kids
Public school students in Rufus King attend Milwaukee Public Schools. They can start at Benjamin Franklin School , which serves prekindergarten through eighth grade and has a D-plus on Niche. From there, they can head to Rufus King International High School for ninth through 12th grade. Rufus King International High is a magnet school with an A on Niche. It was established in 1934 and consistently ranks among Milwaukee’s and Wisconsin’s top high schools. “It draws people from all over the city,” says Beth Jaworski, a former student who has worked in Milwaukee real estate for the past 30 years. Jaworski says that many of her fellow alums became attorneys, judges and local elected officials. “A lot of leaders go there, and the teachers steer them that way,” she says.Lincoln Park and William Gore Park offer outdoor recreation
Rufus King residents have quick access to Lincoln Park, one of the city’s signature green spaces. This 313-acre park offers a challenging nine-hole golf course, soccer fields, and walking paths that take full advantage of the Milwaukee River that runs through everything. Visitors cool off at Lincoln Park’s David F. Schulz Aquatic Center on hot summer days and catch a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ball game at Henry “Hank” Aaron Field, the baseball diamond in the park’s southwest corner named after the baseball legend. Within the neighborhood, William Gore Park features a basketball court, a colorful play area with a net climber and an 85-foot-long zipline.Locals break bread at Mr. Perkins Family Restaurant
Rufus King is mainly residential, but a few retailers are scattered throughout the community, including the iconic Mr. Perkins Family Restaurant, which has been serving classic diner fare and soul food since 1969. This family-owned staple is so well-known that prominent athletes like Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley have stopped by. “We’re starting to get more soul food restaurants, but this is probably one of the first in town,” Jaworski says. “They have a long tradition and a huge clientele, probably up to the third and fourth generation.” For shopping, residents run weekend errands at Walmart and other major retailers in Williamsburg Heights, a few miles east.
I-43, MCTS buses help residents get around
Interstate 43, accessible from the neighborhood’s eastern side, connects to downtown Milwaukee and other major highways for easy access to the rest of the state. The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has several stops along North Teutonia Avenue and North Green Bay Avenue and travels throughout the city. Residents have easy access to the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, about 14 miles south of the neighborhood.
