Silver City's value is on the rise
In the late 19th century, cash registers in Silver City rattled with silver dollars, which the local train manufacturers used to pay their employees. Hence the neighborhood's name. As the industrial might of the Menomonee Valley diminished over the next century, so did Silver City. But in recent years, the neighborhood has flourished once again as new residents breathe fresh cultural life into the community. In addition, the city's investment in parks and educational centers has helped reinvent the neighborhood. "It's an up-and-coming area with a really attractive urban nature center," says Realtor Aiste Sterle, who owns a property in the neighborhood and sells real estate in Milwaukee with RE/MAX Lakeside.
Early 20th-century bungalows and duplexes
Most of the homes in Silver City were built in the late 19th and early 20th century, including Craftsman-style single-family houses and two-story duplexes. Closely huddled lots also fill the neighborhood, where homebuyers find wood-framed homes with yards about 15 feet off the road, and backyards with patios and gardens. Residents generally park on the streets. The neighborhood's median single-family home price falls well below Milwaukee's median. "Affordability is a big factor in Silver City," says Realtor Yoon Kim, who sells homes in the area with RE/MAX Lakeside. Houses range from $125,000 to $275,000 in price. Buyers might spend up to the high $200,000s for a well-maintained, three-bedroom house, while smaller, turnkey homes with fewer renovations start in the low to mid-$100,000s.
Mamie's, the Vientiane Noodle Shop and the Asian International Market
Most residents shop and dine along West National Avenue, which runs through the center of the neighborhood and has a mosaic sculpture that reads "Silver City Welcomes You" marking the middle of the bustling business district. Mamie's is a shoebox-shaped brick building with a red neon sign displaying the tavern's name and two tilted martini glasses. Passersby are drawn into Mamie's by the multi-colored string lights and timeworn voices of live blues singers. Once inside, folks can pull up a stool at the bar and get to know their neighbors over plates of ribs and baked potatoes. Just down the street, the Vientiane Noodle Shop serves warm bowls of pho and sweet cups of bubble tea. Framed pictures of Laotian cultural figures hang from the walls. Through the storefront window of the Asian International Market, also along West National Avenue, shoppers see straw baskets and pewter pots. Inside, the market is stocked with household items and groceries. The neighborhood is about a half mile east of Miller Park Way, lined with retailers like Walmart, Target and Aldi.
Spanish-English public education
Because of Milwaukee's school choice policy, parents can apply to send their children to schools throughout the city, but the neighborhood is home to several popular options. Just east of the neighborhood, the Anna F. Doerfler School is part of Milwaukee Public Schools and offers a bilingual Spanish-English curriculum option to kindergarten through eighth-grade students. It has a C-minus Niche rating. Escuela Verde is one of two Silver City high schools run by TransCenter for Youth, a non-profit that seeks to serve children through culturally sensitive teaching and small class sizes. It has a B-minus Niche rating. Also within Silver City, El Puente High School has a C Niche rating and emphasizes math and science subjects. The C Niche-rated South Division High School, also part of MPS, is less than 2 miles east via West Greenfield Avenue.
Three Bridges Park and the Urban Ecology Center
The city has invested heavily in the parks in and around Silver City. Arlington Heights Park is in the center of the neighborhood, along the South 35th Street Bridge. About a decade ago, a local park restoration group called MKE Plays added a playground with a netted jungle gym and a pavilion for live music to the park. However, the area's most prominent outdoor escape is just north at Three Bridges Park. Visitors enter the park via the Hank Aaron State Trail and pass through the Menomonee Valley Passage, a tunnel beneath the railroad marked by a colorful mural. The park has 2 miles of trails, 40-plus community gardens, walking bridges and Menomonee River access. "It's a beautiful, hilly park," says Urban Ecology Center Menomonee Valley Branch Director Angelica Sanchez. "There are beautiful prairies with some forested areas, and there are lots of trails. Actually, the Hank Aaron State Trail goes through the park, so it's got easy access for people to bike through it and enjoy nature." Just west of the Three Bridges Park, the Urban Ecology Center is a model "green" building that offers environmental education to local school children. Through a UEC membership, residents can go on canoe and ski trips.
The Silver City InterNational Festival
The annual Silver City InterNational Festival attracts thousands of residents to the blocks between 33rd and 35th streets to celebrate the neighborhood's rich culture. The event includes a blend of the traditional dances, music and cuisine from the Hmong people of Latin America.
Getting around Milwaukee
The streets are lined with sidewalks, which help residents access shopping and dining options along West National Avenue. South 35th Street, West Greenfield Avenue and West National Avenue are lined with bus stops. Downtown Milwaukee is 4 miles northeast via Interstate 94. Folks also take Interstate 94 about 11 miles south to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
Crime
Silver City has a 6/10 CAP Index crime score, compared to a 4/10 national average. The neighborhood's violent crime scores are above average.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
