Whittier is home to Eat Street and artistic landmarks in Minneapolis

Whittier is as much defined by its vibrant arts scene as its strong sense of community. One of the neighborhood highlights is Eat Street, which is arguably the most popular dining district in Minneapolis. Before you grab dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area, you can visit the Minneapolis Institute of Art or meet up with some neighbors for a community clean-up. Most people walk or bike around Whittier, and downtown Minneapolis is just over 2 miles away.

Historic homes, condos and townhouses in a renter-heavy neighborhood

Nearly 90% of Whittier’s residents are renters, and there are several apartment buildings in the neighborhood. Still, there are plenty of options to own, from condos and townhouses to homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, including those in the Washburn-Fair Oaks Historic District. “There are a lot of beautiful older homes, some of which have now been divided into multifamily units,” says Anna Schmitz, executive director of the Whittier Alliance. These older houses include Italianate and Craftsman styles.

The median single-family home price is higher than in Lyndale, but the median townhouse price is lower. Most houses cost between the mid-$200,000s and the mid-$600,000s; townhouses and condos range from under $100,000 to the high $200,000s.

Eat Street restaurants cater to every taste

Whitter is home to Eat Street, a cluster of restaurants along Nicollet Avenue. Some options include:

  • Black Forest Inn, which was the first restaurant to open on Eat Street
  • Quang, a longstanding Vietnamese restaurant
  • Copper Hen Kitchen, which is known for its farm-to-table menu
  • Christos, a Greek restaurant with family-style dining
  • Eat Street Crossing, a food hall with colorful murals and different food vendors
There is also plenty of shopping in the neighborhood, including Karmel Mall. “It’s the largest Somali mall outside of Somalia," Schmitz says. "It has a huge range of businesses inside, from restaurants to clothing stores... You name it, they’ve got it.”

Minneapolis College of Art and Design is in the neighborhood

Minneapolis College of Art and Design is based in Whittier and has programs across several disciplines, including design, fine arts and media arts. “We have college students who are attending MCAD, and then we also have families of young kids who are going to elementary school,” Schmidtz says. Younger students attend highly rated Minneapolis Public Schools, which offer school choice through intradistrict transfers and citywide magnet schools.

Art-lovers visit the Minneapolis Institute of Art and local galleries

Whittier’s love of the arts goes beyond MCAD, with the Minneapolis Institute of Art located in the neighborhood. There are over 100,000 permanent artworks on display, along with rotating exhibits. While special events may require a ticket, general admission is free. The Tony Award-winning Children’s Theatre Company, located in MIA, encourages kids to attend live theater and get involved in productions. “I think that there is an artistic spirit,” Schmitz says. “There’s a range of folks who are involved in various artistic pursuits and lots of places to express that in the neighborhood.” One such place is Fallout Arts Initiative, with a gallery space and studio where people can display their art and work on new projects.

Washburn Fair Oaks Park and Whittier Park offer outdoor recreation

After visiting MIA, residents can cross the street to Washburn Fair Oaks Park, which Schmitz says, “is more of an open, grassy area for picnicking or walking around.” Whitter Park has some more traditional park amenities, including:

  • A playground for younger kids to play on
  • A futsal and basketball court
  • A wading pool that’s open in the summer
  • A recreation center with a craft studio, gym and technology hub
Within minutes, you can be on the shores of Bde Mada Ska. “I think that’s a big part of living in Minneapolis, the access to all of the beautiful lakes in the city,” Schmitz says.

Close community with a neighborhood alliance and resident-led events

The Whittier Alliance offers community resources, such as free bike tune-ups and educational workshops, represents residents in policy conversations and hosts social events. Still, Schmitz says that it’s the residents who create a strong sense of community. “I find Whittier to be a really friendly, welcoming, organized neighborhood,” she says. “There are a lot of ways to plug into what’s happening and a lot of folks who are working to get neighbors engaged, whether it’s regular trash pickups or a community barbecue.”

Walkable, bikeable neighborhood, just 10 minutes from downtown

Schmitz says that Whitter is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Minneapolis, and it’s clear to see why. “There’s a lot of super convenient and wonderful small businesses nearby for folks to hop over to,” she says. “You can really live your whole day-to-day life within the neighborhood. I think it’s a great benefit for all ages, for younger kids, to be able to have some independence, and for older folks who might not be driving.” Biking is another popular option, especially with the Midtown Greenway. You can also take the Metro Transit bus or drive, with Interstate 35 West nearby. Downtown Minneapolis is about 2 miles (10 minutes) away, while downtown Saint Paul is 10 miles (30 minutes) away.

Whitter is a diverse community. I feel safe and welcome. The brownstone apartments are clean and well kept. I have recently moved back to Minneapolis after living in St. Paul. I never realized how much I missed the area.
