Lakeside living
A neighborhood with high-rise buildings overlooking Lake Merritt, Lakeside’s location is a draw for potential residents. It’s also next to downtown Oakland. “Lakeside gives the feeling of being in a big metropolis area,” says Renee Adelmann, owner of Bay Area Modern Real Estate, which has an office in Oakland. “And you also have nature because of the lake.” The primarily residential neighborhood is a short walk to the restaurants and businesses of downtown Oakland and an even quicker walk to Lake Merritt.
On the western shores of Lake Merritt, Lakeside is an aptly named neighborhood.

Shopping and Dining
Downtown Oakland is minutes away and has a culinary scene that features cuisine from all over the world. “Downtown Oakland has a great food scene,” says Adelmann. Mediterranean, Mexican, and Vietnamese food are just some of the flavors that diners can sample. Falafel Boy serves shwarma and kebabs, and a block away, Pho 84 patrons can be seen slurping down their broth at the end of a satisfying meal. There are restaurants on the water, too, like The Lake Chalet. This spot serves upscale seafood from its waterfront location, and small boats are often docked at the restaurant. Most can head to Nature’s Best Foods or Gourmet Market, both located in the neighborhood for groceries.

The Jewel of Oakland
Lake Merritt sparkles in the California sun, so much so that it’s known as The Jewel of Oakland. People are often out on the lake’s waters on non-motorized sailboats, and all around its perimeter, onlookers enjoy views of the water. Lakeside Park is the biggest natural attraction near the neighborhood. The park is home to multiple gardens open for visitors, from the buzzing Bee Hotel garden to the tasty edible garden. Snow Garden is a little smaller than Lakeside Park, and much closer. Golfers come to the park to line up putts on its mini putting green, and people often gather at the park for seasonal holidays like the Fourth of July or Saint Patrick’s Day.

Condos
Condos are the name of the game in Lakeside, and many of them have full views of Lake Meritt. Prices range from around $500,000 to $1.6 million. Tall Lakefront properties land on top of the price range, and shorter buildings a few blocks back from the water tend to go for less. Most of the buildings in Lakeside are residential, so people in the neighborhood have the feeling of a neighborhood with the aesthetics of a cityscape.

Oakland Unified School District
The area is served by the Oakland Unified School District, which has a B-minus rating on Niche. Students begin their academic journey at Lincoln Elementary School, which has B grade on Niche and continue at C-minus-rated Westlake Middle School. Oakland Technical High School has an A rating, and specialty academic courses like computer academy, fashion and design academy.

Getting around Lakeside
People can walk to food and entertainment, but to get around the city most use the BART bus system or hop in the car.
