An abundance of bungalows and Craftsman-style homes with small yards and attached garages are found in Maxwell Park. The neighborhood’s housing stock has plenty of quirks, from whimsical, Victorian-esque turrets to stucco homes with red-tiled rooftops and the occasional towering palm tree. Most homes were built in the 1920s by the neighborhood’s namesake, developer John P. Maxwell. “A lot of the homes have been owned by particular families for generations,” says Realtor Anissa Burnley with KW Advisors East Bay, who has nine years of experience and was raised in the East Bay. Many have since been renovated with more modern amenities and remodeled kitchens, attracting tech industry professionals relocating from San Francisco, according to Burnley. Homes in the neighborhood are typically priced between $750,000 and $1 million.

Maxwell Park is bordered by Mills College at Northeastern University, a private, historic college that recently merged with Boston-based Northeastern University. While Maxwell Park is mainly a residential neighborhood, great dining options are always close. Homemade pastries are at Green House Bakery, dubbed a “pastry speakeasy” that dishes out delicious baked goods from the ground floor of a Maxwell Park home. CocoBreeze Caribbean Restaurant and Bakery is a local favorite Trini eatery that has received high praise from Bay Area foodies for its authentic cuisine. Just a short drive to Fruitvale takes diners to places like Taqueria El Paisa, an East Bay staple listed in the Michelin Guide. The nearby Laurel District offers some new dining options. “The Laurel is a popular spot full of restaurants and new breweries,” says Burnley. “A Michelin chef will actually be opening a new restaurant there soon.”

Immersion programs for middle schoolers
As part of the Oakland Unified School District, students can attend Melrose Leadership Academy through Grade 8 and take advantage of its Spanish-English immersion program. Set on a hill at the center of Maxwell Park, the school’s outdoor play area was relandscaped in 2023 to include more trees, vegetable gardens and planting areas. For high school, students on the west side of Maxwell Park attend Fremont High School, while those on the east side attend Skyline High School. Fremont High was renovated in 2020 with a new academic building, new windows, a football field and a gym. Melrose and Freemont both have Niche scores of C-plus, while Skyline has a B.
