Proximity to abundant nature and shopping in the Oakland hills
Overlooking the City of Oakland and the East Bay, Redwood Heights is a diverse, buzzing neighborhood known for its greenery, proximity to both the great outdoors and commercial corridors, and a connected community of young families and longtime homeowners. The area is close to the trendy Laurel District, which is filled with restaurants, breweries and boutiques. Plus, the majestic redwood trees of Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park are less than 3 miles away. "I raised both my kids here. They're in their twenties now. I know my daughter would love to still live here," says Deidre Joyner, a local Realtor with Red Oak Realty. "There are streets with cul-de-sacs, homes with mature landscaping, and it’s often sunny.” Lauded for its beauty, friendly atmosphere and pleasant weather, Redwood Heights has long been a popular choice for buyers in the Bay Area. The community has a wide range of houses of worship that reflect the area’s global nature, and many offer services in multiple languages. Methodist, Catholic and Baptist churches are close to home, as is the Oakland California Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Within a five-mile radius, there are also several Buddhist temples, conservative and reform synagogues, and the Islamic Center of Alameda, which is currently constructing a new masjid.

Thousands of acres of redwood groves and outdoor adventure are a short drive away from the neighborhood. “Redwood Heights is a very green area,” says Andrea Gordon, a Realtor with Compass. “There are a lot of parks around, and it’s just on the other side of Joaquin Miller Park, Redwood Regional Park and Leona Canyon.” The neighborhood is roughly 2 miles from the sprawling 1,883-acre Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, where 150-foot-tall coastal redwoods harbor rare wildlife like the golden eagle. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders take advantage of more than 40 miles of trails throughout the park, including the East Bay Skyline National Trail and the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Also about 2 miles away, Joaquin Miller Park is a favorite location where visitors can wander through redwood groves. Million-dollar Contemporary and Craftsman homes
Redwood Heights began as a close-in suburb of Oakland in the early 20th century, years after giant redwoods were cut down to help build the Bay Area cities that rose following the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s. The neighborhood has a variety of styles, including contemporary, Mission, Craftsman, bungalows and midcentury modern. The hilly, sidewalk-lined streets are a hallmark of the community. Some hillside homes have sweeping views of San Francisco Bay. “Craftsman and midcentury modern homes built between the 1930s and 1950s are the most common, but you’ll find some trophy-style homes along 35th Avenue and Redwood Road,” Gordon says. Bungalows and cottages under 1,000 square feet can range from $625,000 to $800,000. Homes of any style over 1,000 square feet can fetch between $1 million and $2 million.

Air quality issues and risk of fire
The American Lung Association's 2024 State of the Air report ranked the Bay Area — which includes Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose — as the fifth-worst city for year-round particle pollution. Local pollution sources like cars and freights contribute to the problem. The Oakland port is one of the busiest in the country. Smoke from wildfires also contributes to the area’s air quality issues. Redwood Heights and Oakland itself are at minimal risk of wildfires, but the redwood forests to the east — including Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park — are in the state’s very high fire hazard severity zones.
