"Orchard Park offers a quiet setting. There’s no traffic, it’s super easy living and very family-oriented. Most homes are on a larger parcel than what you might find in the city or north of the city. Lake Erie’s beaches are no more than 10 or 15 minutes down the road, and locals live near Chestnut Ridge Park,” says Geralyn Bonilla of Hunt Real Estate. Chesnut trees decorate the neighborhood’s streets in shades of orange and amber during the crisp months of fall, and many yards have modest-sized pools for summer fun. Students of Orchard Park are served by the Orchard Park Central School District. They attend Ellicott Road Elementary School, Orchard Park Middle School and Orchard Park High School. The elementary school earns an impressive A rating from Niche, the middle school a B-plus and the high school an A-minus. The high school offers a career internship program which sets them up for real-world experiences and connections with future employers. For a quiet place to study, students can head to the Orchard Park Library, which has cozy reading nooks.
The 1,213-acre Chestnut Ridge Park is central to Orchard Park and offers trails for running, hiking, and biking. You can see downtown Buffalo and Lake Erie from the top of its sledding hill on clear days. The park is also the site of Eternal Flame Falls — a small waterfall that emits natural gas that holds a flame year-round.
North and South Buffalo Street are lined with an eclectic array of locally owned businesses nestled within historic buildings. Lunar Rei — a hand-poured candle shop — is one. The Byrd House, a popular brunch spot and a place where locals gather and watch sports, is another. “Mangia Ristorante & Caffe' is also a must,” Bonilla says of the local Italian restaurant. Buff & Flo — a yoga and fitness studio — is where locals go to unwind and relax. There’s also an Aldi’s and Wegman’s less than 6 miles away in West Seneca.
Most people rely on their cars to get around in Orchard Park. The neighborhood is also served by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority which connects most of the Buffalo-Niagra Falls metropolitan area. There’s a bus stop near Orchard Park’s public library. And the nearest airport is Buffalo Niagara International Airport — 17 miles west along Interstate 90. Interstates 219, 20 and 20A cross through the neighborhood, making it a quick commute from Orchard Park to surrounding areas like Hamburg, East Aurora and Downtown Buffalo.
"Orchard Park has an annual ice cream social near the old train station every summer,” Bonilla says. Locals can also watch the Bills play at the Highmark Stadium from November to January. The stadium also hosts the Orchard Park Festival of the Arts each September. The festival hosts 200 vendors from across the Northeastern United States and has occurred since 1961.
Orchard Park has its origins in the 19th century when it was settled by Quakers. While it’s not necessarily classified as a historic neighborhood, it has historic properties, like The Jolls House Museum, where the enclave’s historic society has its headquarters. Orchard Park is also home to the Buffalo Bills and many players live in the neighborhood.
