The original structure was a brick masonry building, transitioning to a wood frame building in the late 1800's. The property has served as many different businesses including a blacksmith shop, J.J. Kuhn's workshop who became a renowned upholsterer, and the home and business of Charles G. Cannon, a famed wallpaper artist of his time. Cannon went on to design wallpapers for homes up and down St. Charles Avenue and the city referred to him as "the artist paper hanger." In the late 1940's, 1723 Prytania was a very popular restaurant known as Harbor Light Bar. In 1950, the Harbor Light Bar suffered a tragic fire as well as some nefarious criminal happenings of the time. Then, in 1977, a neighboring house fire spread to 1723 Prytania, altering the building that led to it's current style you see today. This fire was the reason the building was altered to the one story building it is today. In 1982, the building was purchased and converted into The Prytania Street Washateria. The owner of the Washateria struggled with the growing water bills and ultimately decided it was best to sell it in 2014. The Washateria closed for good in 2020.
