He moved to Boulder in 1988 from New Orleans to attend the University of Colorado, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Conservation. He later obtained a Master of Science in Environmental Education from Southern Oregon University.
Before transitioning into real estate, he applied his education as an environmental educator and teacher. His diverse background also includes experience as a professional whitewater kayaker, Outward Bound and NOLS instructor, freelance writer and photographer in the outdoor/adventure industry, and senior editor for Kayak Session and Paddle World magazines.
