About Mary

Since joining Brown Harris Stevens in 1984, and subsequently winning the firm’s Rookie of the Year award in her first year, Mary K. Rutherfurd has created an impressive 35-year legacy of outstanding achievement in residential real estate. Specializing in Manhattan’s high-end market, and highly sought after for her incomparable experience and discreet professionalism, Mary continues to rank as one of the city’s top brokers.

Mary has always held herself to the highest ethical and professional standards and in 2014 Brown Harris Stevens recognized this by presenting her with the President’s Award. The President’s Award was created to recognize outstanding achievement and the display of character and commitment that brings honor and credit to Brown Harris Stevens and the industry. Mary is one of only four agents ever to receive this honor. In 2020 Mary was honored with REBNY's prestigious Henry Forster Memorial Award.

Mary has achieved record setting prices for the sale of cooperative apartments on several occasions. In 2005 when she sold the triplex penthouse at 834 Fifth Avenue, it had the distinction of being the first residential real estate transaction to be reported on the cover of the New York Times.

Since then she has collaborated with her daughter, Leslie Coleman, and they have continued setting records – in 2010 with a sale at 927 Fifth Avenue, in 2014 with the sale of the Penthouse at 960 Fifth Avenue, and in 2017 with the sale of the Penthouse in the Pierre.

This past year Mary and Leslie sold the 40-foot wide townhouse located at 146 East 65th Street, the former home of David Rockefeller. The Wall Street Journal and Real Trends have recognized Mary and Leslie as one of America’s top real estate professional teams. The closed deals listed below are a further testament to their success. They have thrived because they have earned the trust and loyalty of their clients who keep returning to them with referrals, while their colleagues seek them out because of the admiration they have for the way in which they comport themselves in business.

A native and life-long resident of New York, Mary graduated from Wheaton College with a B.A. in History. She and her husband, Winthrop Rutherfurd, Jr., Retired Partner of Counsel at the law firm of White & Case – live on Fifth Avenue. They have a weekend house in the Beaverkill Valley in the Catskills, and spend time in the summer on Fishers Island, NY. They are parents to three grown daughters.
