Northern Barton Heights

Early 20th century Richmond homes
The neighborhood’s single-family housing is made up primarily of remodeled homes built in the early part of the 20th century. Most homes are American Foursquare in style, featuring two-and-a-half stories, a boxy shape and wide front porches. But there are also remodeled Queen Anne-style homes, with wraparound porches and decorative transom windows, Colonial Revival-style homes with symmetrical brick and siding facades and classic low-profile bungalows. “Since most of these homes were built a long time ago, they have tons of character,” says Dobler. “The rooms are huge and there are a lot of little things that make them special, like high ceilings, big windows, multiple entrances. Some of them even have basements and balconies off the second-floor primaries. They built them right back then,” she says. Prices here range between $320,000 and $480,000.Richmond Public Schools
Neighborhood kids are served by schools in the Richmond Public Schools system. Many go to Mary Scott Preschool and Barack Obama Elementary between preschool and fifth grade, Henderson Middle between sixth and eighth grade and John Marshall High School between ninth and 12th. The elementary and middle school both earned C-minus grades from Niche in 2023. That same year, John Marshall High earned a C. The high school, which is known today as “the joy and pride of Northside,” has served young scholars in Richmond since 1909.Famous tennis courts and local parks nearby
Battery Park sits between Hawthorne and Montrose Avenues within half a mile of most Northern Barton Heights homes. The park offers everything from basketball courts and horseshoe pits to two classic playgrounds. There’s even a community center with a computer lab and a swimming pool. But the park is best known for its tennis courts. They’re the very same courts on which Arthur Ashe, a famous Richmond tennis player known for being the only Black man ever to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open, played as a kid. In 2017, the city added a colorful mural to the park in Ashe’s memory. A few blocks east, off Hooper Street, Chandler Fields is a neighborhood baseball park that hosts organized youth league games.Local eateries, hip bars and groceries
Chamberlayne Avenue and West Brookland Park Boulevard, two main thoroughfares nearby, are lined with tons of dining and entertainment options. Among them are Fuzzy Cactus, a “rock ‘n’ roll bar” with a hipster vibe; Harlym Blue’Z, a restaurant and nightclub; and The Smoky Mug, which serves a combination of craft coffee, authentic barbecue and Tex-Mex dishes. “There are a lot of businesses coming to the neighborhood, especially off of Brookland Park,” says Dobler. “It’s becoming like another Carytown, but with way bigger houses and way bigger lots,” she adds. “Just a few years ago, this area was just ‘Northside,’ but it’s quickly becoming a real destination neighborhood where people come for dinner or even just to walk around.” For groceries, residents head southwest. Aldi and Whole Foods are both on West Broad Street within 2.5 miles of home. Kroger is even closer, off North Lombardy Street just over a mile away.Getting around Richmond
Richmond’s Main Street Station, a working Amtrak train station, is just a 10-minute drive south to Shockoe Bottom. The Richmond International Airport is not much farther. Via Interstate-64, the 11-mile drive takes about 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Getting around the city is a breeze even without a car, with stops along the Greater Richmond Transit Company’s bus line positioned at intervals along North Avenue, West Brookland Park Boulevard and Chamberlayne Avenue. Those three streets are main thoroughfares that locals can take advantage of to get around the city by car, too. The Children’s Hospital of Richmond is just over a mile west across Chamberlayne Avenue.
