Living in the "Neighborhood of Trees"
Anyone stepping into Curtis Park will immediately take notice of its towering elm and palm trees lining the streets, which has resulted in the neighborhood's nickname: "Neighborhood of Trees." There's even more greenery at its namesake park, where residents often gather for events. Mairin Haley, a lifelong Sacramento resident and Realtor, describes the area as "a quaint place with very rich roots and history." Haley: "Everyone here is extremely friendly. someone is definitely going to stop to talk to your dog when you're on a walk." The town is about a 1.4-mile drive away from Midtown.
From Bungalows to Tudors
Many homes here were built during the 1930s-1940s. While housing styles vary, the neighborhood is known mainly for its Victorians, bungalows and Tudors. "Many of the wealthy families back in the day had homes built here," says Haley. "It was affluent then and still is now." Most residents are homeowners, at 65%, while the remaining are renters at 35%. Prices start at $600,000 and go up to $1.6 million for larger or older homes. The median sale price is about $720,000.
Supportive programs at McClathy High School
Children can begin their studies at Bret Harte Elementary School, which receives a C rating from Niche. Students can then continue at California Middle School and C.K. McClatchy High School, earning B and B-plus overall ratings. C.K. McClatchy High School offers the ASSETs program to its students, which provides extra enrichment outside of the classroom. These courses can be taken for credit. Some of the lessons include Jazz Band, Theater Production, Life Guarding and ESL Academic Success.
Enjoying the day at Curtis Park
Curtis Park shares a name with this park, a green space that spans over 18 acres. There are picnic tables, ball fields, a play area and tennis courts. The park features a trail that is about a mile long and is frequently used for walking and jogging. Community events are also held regularly at the park. "There are events organized by the neighborhood, like Little League and Soccer Club. People are always walking here: lots of pets and families going around having a great time."
Shopping & Dining at Curtis Park
The neighborhood is primarily residential, but there is a small retail corridor. Dining options include Hop Gardens, Cafe Dantorels and Gunther's Ice Cream. Cafe Dantorels is a local favorite, serving crepes, sandwiches, pasta and omelets. Haley personally recommends the Eggs Benedict. Hop Gardens is a taproom that also serves Neapolitan-style pizzas. For groceries, residents can head to Safeway, located south of the neighborhood. For more options, Midtown is about a 1.5-mile drive away.
Consuming 500 pounds of crab
The Sierra 2 Center for the Arts & Community provides a space for gatherings. The Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association holds the Curtis Park Crab Feed at the center, where nearly 500 pounds of crabs and plenty of craft beer and local wine are consumed. The Center also hosts an annual Easter Parade, Egg Hunt and a Wine Tasting and Silent Auction. The center also has a senior center, and it holds classes ranging from dance to meditation to Kung fu.
Traveling with Interstate 5
Curtis Park is bordered by Highway 50 and Highway 99. Also nearby is Interstate 5, which residents can take to Sacramento International Airport, about a 12.5-mile drive away. There are also public transportation options, such as buses that run on Franklin Blvd and Broadway.

Curtis Park is a pleasant neighborhood to live in as it is fairly quiet compared to most of Sacramento. Events such as Music at the Park keep is alive and I always feel safe enough to take walks at the park's track. We are close enough to midtown that I can ride my bike to grab a bite to eat or go to work in the downtown area. Also, the location is perfect because of its close proximity to light rail which can take me anywhere from Folsom to the Amtrak station. Probably the best perk for me is being able to walk to Sacramento City College.

This neighborhood makes me feel unsafe. I no longer am able to take walks alone - forget walking out my front door after dark. This place has quickly declined in the recent year and law enforcement is absent. It now takes over 6 minutes to reach anyone on 911. If you are considering this area, or Sacramento in general, I would highly urge you to look elsewhere.
