San Francisco yesterday and today
In today’s downtown San Francisco, there is always a restaurant to try, a shop to browse and a sight to see. Compass Realtor Jeremy Davidson says, “You have Union Square for name-brand and gallery shopping while Nob Hill is one of San Francisco’s more luxurious neighborhoods but all around, there are amazing restaurants, shops and galleries.” Additionally, the downtown area has lots of interesting backstories. The Union Square district is named after its history as the gathering spot for Union army supporters during the Civil War. The Nob Hill area was once home to the decadent mansions of tycoons who made their fortunes at the turn of the century. City landmark Grace Cathedral is over 90 years old and continues to stun with its French Gothic architecture. With its rich history and a variety of dining, shopping and entertainment options, downtown San Francisco thrives.

Shopping and dining, San-Francisco-style
On nearly every street, there’s a restaurant or bar. Diners can try a Swedish-American breakfast fusion at Sears Fine Food or deli sandwiches at Tommy’s Joynt, which has been serving the community for over 75 years. When going out for a drink, they can stop by Top of the Mark, a bar that is well-known for its panoramic 360-degree views. When staying in for dinner, residents can pick up groceries at Trader Joe’s and Pine & Jones Market. Shops all over the neighborhood sell everything from clothing and jewelry to electronics and used books.

Lots of entertainment options
Residents won’t have trouble finding things to do in the neighborhood or even right outside it. They can head to Union Square, a bustling district filled with restaurants, retail and nightlife. They can also explore Chinatown and Japantown to discover the Asian and Pacific Islander cultures that have shaped the community. Downtown is also home to many venues to see a show or concert, like August Hall, American Conservatory Theater and the San Francisco Playhouse.

Relaxation and recreation downtown
The parks around downtown offer a variety of activities and relaxing spots. Huntington Square Park features an elegant stone fountain and plenty of benches to take a rest. Betty Ann Ong Recreation Center is known as “Chinatown’s backyard” and is a great place to play a game of ping-pong, host a community meeting or attend an after-school program. Father Alfred E. Boeddeker Park offers a playground and basketball court, and its community clubhouse hosts activity programs.

Condos with views
Homes have unique exterior designs that reflect both an adaptability to the hilly urban landscape and San Francisco’s funky aesthetic. According to Davidson, one style is especially common to the neighborhood. “You have a mix of old condo buildings with sweeping views, some of the Bay or Coit Tower or downtown,” he says. Along with luxury condos, Victorian buildings and brick complexes reflect the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the city. Homes range from $360,000 to $2.2 million. The housing market is slow, with homes remaining on the market for about 80 days, nearly double the national average.

The many ways of traveling around the neighborhood
The downtown area is great for pedestrians thanks to its many sidewalks and walkable districts. Several of the downtown streets are long, one-way avenues, while others have bike lanes painted green to visibly mark them for cyclists. Residents can take the subway or catch a ride on San Francisco’s famous cable cars that traverse the steep hilly terrain. When going beyond the neighborhood, drivers have their choice of two major roadways: Interstate-80 and US-101. I-80 runs from San Francisco to Teaneck, New Jersey while US-101 connects to Sausalito and further out to Los Angeles to the south and Tumwater, Washington to the north. When venturing out beyond the city by plane, San Francisco International Airport is about fourteen miles away.
Bike lanes are large and green, very helpful if you like riding through Lower Nob Hill.
