Little Italy district of San Francisco
While North Beach, a northeast San Francisco neighborhood, isn’t by the ocean as its name suggests, it offers a unique, walkable city vibe that feels very European. Known as the city’s “Little Italy” neighborhood, North Beach has been home to generations of Italian Americans. "When we meet people who live in North Beach, they want to stay in North Beach," says Kristen Stuecher, a Realtor and principal at Stuecher Manning Group with Compass San Francisco who has more than a decade of Bay Area real estate sales experience. “It’s one of the most desirable neighborhoods here.” And that desirability means it can be challenging to get in. "There isn’t a lot of turnover,” says Cindy Manning, principal at Stuecher Manning Group with Compass San Francisco, Realtor, and long-time San Francisco resident. “And that scarcity keeps values high there.”

Tosca Café is a popular neighborhood Italian-American restaurant known for its Tuscan fried chicken and kale pesto pappardelle, while Caffe Trieste serves espresso-based drinks. The Italian Homemade Company is a highly rated deli and market, with homemade pasta and imported Italian items, including cheeses, while more grocery items can be found at the Trader Joe’s on Bay Street.

Annual Italian Heritage Festival and Parade
North Beach has a popular annual festival in the neighborhood, the Italian Heritage Festival & Parade. Started in 1868, it is the oldest Italian heritage parade in the United States and draws in large crowds every October with Italian food varieties and activities. “It’s really fun,” Stuecher says. “There’s tons of live music, and the food is amazing. It’s a really great weekend.”

Edwardian-style buildings and renovated condos
The gridded, hilly streets are lined with tall Edwardian-style condo buildings, many painted in soft pastels or moody greys. Many of the condos in the area have been renovated, offering modern appliances and big bay windows. Outside, the streets are narrow, with clusters of leafy trees and lined with paved sidewalks. Condo prices range from around $1 million for a 1,000-square-foot unit to $2.4 million for a 3,000-square-foot condo. There are just a handful of single-family home options that fit the median price of $1.1million.
