With its location 1.5 miles from downtown San Jose and immediate access to public transit, Saint Leo’s – sometimes abbreviated as St. Leo’s – is a convenient residential area nestled in the urban heart of the city. The neighborhood’s name derives from the Saint Leo the Great Church, a Roman Catholic church founded in 1923, and The Alameda, a historic area lined with small businesses and dining, borders it to the north. “It’s probably one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the area, especially because you have The Alameda boulevard right here,” says Michael Kenyon, a Bay Area native and Realtor with Compass. “It’s a great area for first-time homebuyers looking for walkability and nearby restaurants.” Shri Krishna Vrundavana Temple draws Hindu devotees from across the Bay Area to the neighborhood, and students here are served by the San Jose Unified School District, which receives an overall B-plus rating from Niche.

Immediate access to highways, trains and bus routes
Kenyon says there are plenty of transit options in Saint Leo’s for those working downtown or commuting to nearby Silicon Valley tech companies. The neighborhood sits adjacent to the Interstate 280 and Highway 87 corridor, and commuters can also walk to the Diridon Station to catch the San Jose light rail or regional trains operated by Amtrak and Caltrain. The Valley Transportation Authority operates local bus services and offers several stops along The Alameda and Race Street. The San Jose Mineta International Airport is a few miles north of Saint Leo’s and features dozens of nonstop domestic and international flights across 11 airlines. Although the airport noise doesn’t really affect the neighborhood, people living along The Alameda or near the Diridon Station might hear noise from traffic and trains.

Older bungalows and newer condo complexes
Tree-lined sidewalks and bungalows with Spanish and Craftsman-style architecture flank the gridded streets of Saint Leo’s. Most single-family and multifamily homes in this neighborhood were built between the 1900s and the 1950s. In contrast, the neighborhood’s apartment complexes were mainly developed in the 21st century and feature more contemporary architecture. “There was a surge in construction about 10 to 15 years ago that created a lot of nice condo complexes, so there's a mix of newer and older construction in this area,” Kenyon says. Many of these complexes wrap around Cahill Park and are conveniently located near the transit station. Single-family and multifamily properties usually sell between $1.1 million and $1.6 million, while condo units and townhouses typically range from $1 million to $1.2 million. “Relative to other San Jose neighborhoods and suburbs, this area is less expensive,” Kenyon says. “There’s a big appeal to being in a downtown city area with a more affordable price point.”

Dining along The Alameda
Saint Leo’s residents are within walking distance of numerous shopping and dining options, most of which sit along The Alameda boulevard. An Ace Hardware store and newly built Whole Foods Market sit directly opposite the neighborhood across the boulevard, and a little farther down the street is a pocket of popular local restaurants and cafes. Greenlee’s Bakery is a baked goods store known for its beloved cinnamon bread, while the next-door Crema Coffee Roasting Company is a bustling breakfast spot where residents can get their morning caffeine fix. Café Rosalena, a local mainstay since 1995, features a menu full of signature breakfast burritos and sandwiches. For a casual night out, neighbors flock to Las Cazuelas Restaurant to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine and margaritas on an outdoor patio.

Sporting events and concerts at the “Shark Tank”
Within walking distance of Saint Leo’s is the SAP Center, a massive event venue that hosts year-round sports games and concerts. Kenyon says that locals typically refer to the center as the “Shark Tank” because it’s where the city’s professional ice hockey team, the San Jose Sharks, play. Art Boutiki Music Hall is a laid-back music venue that houses a comic book store, an art gallery and a café.
Cahill Park has acres of open green space
Cahill Park is an urban neighborhood park that spans just under four acres. The park features a half basketball court, two playgrounds and a paved walking path often used by dog walkers. Just outside the neighborhood and next to the SAP Center is the Arena Green Park, an outdoor green space along the Guadalupe River; here, locals can use tennis courts to play a match, set up a picnic on the park’s spacious green lawn and access the Los Gatos Creek Trail, a 9.7-mile pedestrian pathway frequented by cyclists and walkers.

Students zoned for San Jose Unified School District
Kindergarten through fifth grade students can attend Merritt Trace Elementary, a C-plus-rated primary school a little over a mile outside the neighborhood. Herbert Hoover Middle serves students in grades six through eight and earns a B-minus rating from Niche.
