Well-preserved 19th-century homes
Old oaks trim each square, their oversized branches dramatically dripping with silvery Spanish moss. "You can almost walk through time as you travel through the city," Davenport says. Historic Savannah's concentration of well-preserved architecture sets it apart from other cities like it. Ornate brick row homes with cozy bay windows sit beside Italianate townhouses with cast-iron embellishments and stately Greek Revivals. "Buyers want to see preserved fireplaces with trim and molding. That's the fun of the old houses - the original details mean a lot to people." Properties in Historic Savannah start around $500,000 for condos, and single-family townhouses range between $850,000 and $3 million, depending on the size and level of maintenance. Some elaborate estates climb as high as $6 million. Overall, most listings hover around $950,000 and find new owners within a month or so.
Farmers markets at Forsyth Park
Historic statues, fountains and old-growth trees anchor Historic Savannah's picture-perfect park squares, flanked by tight rows of stately original homes. "The city is so green," says Davenport, "The 22 squares put parks in the middle of your life - they're like lungs." Throughout the year, Savannah hosts events, including the famous St. Patrick's Day Parade, the 4th of July Celebration, and Wag-O-Ween, all of which take place outdoors. Savannahians also enjoy the Forsyth Farmer's Market every Saturday morning, year-round. "On a nice day, Forsyth Park is packed," says Davenport, "it's a beautiful thing to see and a really fun, busy place."Savannah Arts Academy and private STEM schools
Students who live in the Historic District can attend the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Many get started at Gadsden Elementary and continue to Derenne Middle before finishing up at the top-rated Savannah Arts Academy, boasting an overall A-plus score on Niche. Historic Savannah families are also convenient to several private and charter schools, including the STEM Academy at Bartlett and St. Vincent's Academy, touting high graduation rates and small class sizes, giving students individualized learning opportunities.
Local eateries across town
"Historic Savannah is a fun and entertaining place," says Davenport. A growing destination city, Savannah brims with local boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants. The wide selection of small businesses offers a host of "fabulous little local things with a different flavor to each one," Davenport says. For fresh local seafood, there's Sorry Charlie's Oyster Bar, featuring a raw bar, rooftop seating and views of Ellis Square and beyond. Herbivores can head to the Fox and Fig for vegan eats in a chic and modern café or check out their sister shop, The Coffee Fox, to grab a morning pick-me-up and a bag of beans to go. The centrally located Kroger on Gwinnett Street is the local go-to for everyday grocery pickups. Most malls and big box stores are a few miles south along the interstate.Historic Savannah is a biker's paradise
Historic Savannah professionals live close to many top employers, including the Memorial Health University Medical Center and several colleges. The trailing sidewalks, public transportation options and warm coastal weather make car-free lifestyles more common. Many locals opt for a walk or bike ride to work, often rubbing shoulders with college students toting portfolios on their way to class. For a sunny day trip or weekend getaway, Tybee and Hilton Head Islands are 15 and 30 miles away, respectively. The Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport is also a quick trip west for long-distance travel.
